As of next May, smoking in public — as well as all tobacco advertising — has been banned by the nation’s Communist government. The law passed almost unanimously in the national assembly with 440 of 468 Vietnamese deputies voting Monday in favor. The new law will also make the sale of tobacco products illegal to those under 18 – something that had not been stipulated in Vietnam’s laws before. This is not the first time the government has tried to curb smoking; a similar law was passed in 2010, making it illegal to smoke in public places including schools and subways. That law, which also raised tobacco taxes, went more or less ignored by average Vietnamese — almost 50$ of adult males smoke, according to the Southeast Asia Tobacco Control Alliance (SEATCA) – and most went right on puffing, while cigarettes were still sold openly throughout the country. (PHOTOS: A Profile of Cigarette Warnings From Around the World) According to the SEATCA, 15.3 million smokers call Vietnam home, and 40,000 people die each year from tobacco-related diseases, with that number will most likely rise. Bungon Ritthiphakdee, the director of SEATCA, said that the group was very happy with the new law, which they called an important milestone for Vietnam. Vietnam is following in the footsteps of several other countries that have at least partially banned smoking in public including the United States, France, Canada and Buhtan — which was the first country to ban the sale of tobacco entirely.
almost 50$ of adult males smoke
I wonder how much a Vietnamese male costs.
Showing my full support for this law.
Not a bad initiative to be honest. That shit is dangerous to everybody, yo.
I support this. Oh wait, they're still smoking inside my house. Dang it! Each time my dad's friends come, the only safe place for my lungs is my bathroom.
I'm in China right now, and if you go in a public place, there's people smoking. Even supermarkets. And just look outside

But if you're smoking outside, surely the smoke is just going to dissipate into the atmosphere?
Yeah guys let's ban something that people do on a regular basis! Let's regulate the shit out of what people choose to do with their bodies :downs:
Because we all know how restricting civil liberties goes, right?
Yeah guys let's ban something that people do on a regular basis!
Yeah guys let's ban something that people do on a regular basis! Let's regulate the shit out of what people choose to do with their bodies :downs:
A legitimate complaint...if they were banning smoking in general.
Oh come on now that's downright ridiculous. I can see how second hand smoke can be a problem, but most smokers just step away from non-smoking people. As long as it's causing no harm to anyone but you it shouldn't be a problem. Forbidding smoking in indoor public areas is absolutely fine and necessary though. [editline]21st June 2012[/editline] and crowded outdoor area with literally no room to step away, like train stations and stuff.
Been to all sorts of places in China, almost impossible to breath without an A/C in your face.
I go to China yearly to visit grandparents etc. Rarely do I even see a blue sky, it's always fucking white and grey and depressing.
Although secondhand smoke isn't always a choice, And even though people could just move over sometimes that isn't possible.
I'm sorry but a little smoke isn't going to kill you.
I'm sorry but a little smoke isn't going to kill you.
Agreed but the smell ain't really nice. Smoking should be ok as long as it doesn't bother everyone. That's why banning cigarettes outdoor is stupid, unless it's on a crowded and small place.
Yeah guys let's ban something that people do on a regular basis! Let's regulate the shit out of what people choose to do with their bodies :downs:
Yeah but you do know that nicotine is highly addictive and quite difficult to kick right?
Although secondhand smoke isn't always a choice, And even though people could just move over sometimes that isn't possible.
Secondhand smoke is a choice. You totally have the choice to be near a smoker or not. Also, it isn't like it is going to hurt you. But no, we gotta ban things because you are too much of a child to tolerate anything that goes contrary to your tiny, ignorant world view.
Agreed but the smell ain't really nice.
Some people smell bad as they are. Not an argument, really.
Yeah but you do know that nicotine is highly addictive and quite difficult to kick right?
No one was ever addicted through secondhand smoking.
Yeah but you do know that nicotine is highly addictive and quite difficult to kick right?
It's also the smoker's choice to start smoking in the first place. I smoke and before I started I knew quite clearly the ill effects of smoking. Maybe not the smartest decision but it was still mine to make and it's best I deal with the consequences.
Been to all sorts of places in China, almost impossible to breath without an A/C in your face.
It's ok though because China is a leading source of cheap labour and their environmental condition has no effect on the rest of the world. Oh wait...
I've been to Vietnam, and all I can say is... of all the health and safety problems the country has, smoking is probably the least of their worries. Beautiful place though.
Thanks to agent orange, eh?
How does a child have a choice to stay away from their smoker parents?
How does a child have a choice to stay away from religious parents? How does a child have a choice to stay away from racist parents? Are you going to make these things illegal because the child doesn't have a choice in the matter?
Thanks to agent orange, eh?
Tuberculosis and HIV, AIDS are not connected to agent orange. Vietnam's healthcare in these departments is second to none.
Yeah guys let's ban something that people do on a regular basis! Let's regulate the shit out of what people choose to do with their bodies :downs:
Except when you smoke nicotine products you harm everyone around you.
thank god. I lived in vietnam for 6 years, and I'm sure I developed lung cancer in that span.
Because we all know how restricting civil liberties goes, right?
Public safety comes before civil-liberties. And besides, smoking can cause damage to people who aren't directly taking in the chemicals.
Also, it isn't like it is going to hurt you.
Are you serious? Second hand smoking is harmful and smokers should respect non-smokers, not vice versa.
