ROCKMART, Ga. (AP) -- A man has been paralyzed after diving into a creek in northwest Georgia to save a 4-year-old girl who was in danger of drowning. Rockmart Fire Department Sgt. Chad King says 43-year-old Michael Patterson was visiting the Euharlee Creek with his son Saturday when the girl went underwater. Authorities say the girl had been playing in the creek and appeared to step into a section of deep water. Officials say Patterson dove into the water and was able to rescue the girl, but hit his head during the dive and was critically injured. He was taken to a hospital and doctors say the man is now paralyzed from the chest down. Poor bloke, hope he gets as much help as he needs.

Vicki Davis, Patterson's mother, says he recently started a job installing sheet rock and doesn't have health insurance.
This hero needs a kickstarter or something. A hero doesn't deserve to be fucked over.
Set him up with whatever he wants for the rest of his life Or, more realistically, set him up with the means to live comfortably
this really isn't helping the whole "just mind your own business don't try to help anyone" thing thats been getting worse lately.
this really isn't helping the whole "just mind your own business don't try to help anyone" thing thats been getting worse lately.
That's a real jagged two edge sword. It's the right thing to do, helping someone else. But at the same time, you can fuck yourself up and/or wind up in worse situation than the person you're helping. Hmmm, the moral compass spins like hell.
Honestly, the guy should not have dove into a shallow creek. Its just as effective to jump feet first, but less dangerous. With that being said, he should be given some sort of award or seriously recognized. That's a huge sacrifice to save someone else's life. I don't know how i would feel in his shoes.
I don't know how i would feel in his shoes.
I guess you wouldn't feel anything now...
Vicki Davis, Patterson's mother, says he recently started a job installing sheet rock and doesn't have health insurance.
This is a textbook example of why having health insurance a corporation matter is a fucking retarded idea.

It's kinda sad when pretending stuff isn't happening is the safest way to go about your day as you're less likely to get screwed over. Shame for the guy in the story though. Is paralysis always permanent or can you recover?

If you accidentally make it worse, or even if the person already has suffered a certain injury, they'll blame the only person that tried to help him, and ruin him financially. In most places, only emergency personnel (medics, firefighters, and policemen) are protected from being sued.

If the person is going to die then everything you do can only help at that point.

Is paralysis always permanent or can you recover?
Depends on the injury. Some paralysis injuries revolving around swelling of tissues and such can be reversed. If it's the severing of nerves or destruction of nerve pathways, or brain damage, that's not usually reversible. However, there is always hope of a 'miracle'. The first rule of rescue is to not add to the problem. This guy though sounds like he was fully capable of taking care of himself, he just had an unforeseeable problem in hitting his head. I feel bad for him because being paralyzed from the chest down means having no medical insurance is the least of his problems. Even if a kickstarter gave him a million dollars, his quality of life is going to be severely impacted by this injury.

As long as you have good intentions, and you're not doing anything crazy you should be good to go.
This hero needs a kickstarter or something. A hero doesn't deserve to be fucked over.
There should be some kind of government grant whereby someone who does something heroic like this gets their health services paid for to help them recover from their heroic deed.
I Work at the hospital this guy is staying at, 2 weeks ago he pulled a guy from a wrecked Transfer Truck. Fucking super hero. [editline]12th June 2013[/editline]

The United States and Canada for the most part have Good Samaritan laws to prevent these lawsuits and to encourage people to help others in need.
Yes it's a good thing us rich folk can afford health care while shit peasents like this guy doesn't get good treatment because he's poor. God Bless (User was permabanned for this post ("Awful post, broke last chance." - Craptasket))
big ass picture
img_thumb that shit [editline]12th June 2013[/editline] but to dive into a creek to save someone you have never meet...words can't express my admiration
I don't get something. If the dive broke his neck and paralysed him, how did he save the girl? Maybe I'm not reading something right but could someone explain it to me?

I'm sorry but I think that's a recipe for more problems where she can't make sure she's watching her kids. Something like this might happen again.
girl better appreciate it
I hope her parents inform her of the guy when she gets older. Actually, I hope they keep in touch, I think it'd be nice for the man.
Hmmm, the moral compass spins like hell.
If anything this guy has the absolute moral highground for risking his life like this.
I don't actually understand how he saved her life.
Officials say Patterson dove into the water and was able to rescue the girl, but hit his head during the dive and was critically injured. He was taken to a hospital and doctors say the man is now paralyzed from the chest down.
This says he hit his head during the dive, but he was still able to rescue the girl? Video says he was floating in the water face down for 3 minutes until anybody realized what had happened as well. How did he still rescue the girl after he broke his neck and severed his spine?
