Deadline caught up with John Boyega in Hollywood where he was announcing the nominees for the 2016 Film Independent Indie Spirit Awards. The actor revealed that he has already seen The Force Awakens and is hesitant on how the fans will react to the movie.

“I think for now, based on what I saw, and based on my experiences on the set, I just don’t know,” Boyega said throwing his hands up. “This is a discussion I was having with J.J. [Abrams] yesterday and I was just like ‘How are people going to react to this movie?’ But there’s going to be a reaction for sure.” He continued, “I’m going to try to see it as many times as possible with different audiences just to gauge everyone’s opinions of it.”
Well that comes with the decision to add onto anything. Imagine if like say, Five Nights at Freddy's never had a sequel. Nobody could hate nothing being added, but there wouldn't have been any more lore.
Must be because Jar Jar will return as the major villain and he thinks it will be controversial!
I want to believe.
There's always gonna be people who love things like this and people who hate it. I guess I can see where the hesitation comes from but idk. I'm sure that even if die hard Star Wars fans aren't fond, there'll still be a whole new audience full of kids and teenagers that'll adore it.
I don't blame him, I mean it is Star Wars and as a Star Wars fan I realize how fickle we can be - especially after the Prequels (which I still love tbh, even though I recognize their problems).
Wondering how many people will take this as John saying " IT'S SHIT!" simply because he's not blindly hyping it.
Thanks /tv/.
I think it's going to be loved, even if it's just by comparsion with the prequels.
It's 3 weeks away... I don't know how ready I am.
I'm gonna piss a lot of people off but at this point I kind of hope it sucks.
Star Wars needs to die. It needed to die long before the prequels, because everything afterwards has completely failed to live up to the OT and quite frankly I'm sick of seeing Star Wars. It's being shoved down our throats now at every conceivable turn and Disney has announced that they plan to do so for the rest of our lives, and I don't think I can take it. Let's be over with it and move on to bigger and better things. Let go of the past and move on.

so do you think that Star Wars has gone too far in a few places
Of course he should be uncertain lmao. The last time they tried to make a new trilogy it was a disaster (tho it took a bit of time before people well and truly began to dislike it). Trying yet again is a risky fucking move. But I'm fine with it since I'm as casual of a star wars fan as they come. I'll be pleased regardless most likely.
It can only go up from here.

i'd like to think in a world where truly adult and complex stories like game of thrones exist, that star wars in its entirety (yes even the OT) would finally be seen as the juvenile fucking dogshit it is and be laughed out of society.
but nope.

Gentlemen, pick your complementary torch and pitchfork.
I'm going to just sit back and enjoy the show.

It's fine to have juvenile escapist fantasies mate, not everything has to be a profound exploration of human nature. There's a room in the world for dumb enjoyable films.
It'll probably be just fine. Even if it was a perfect movie, knowing a lot of Star Wars fans, they'd still pick it apart.
As long as it isn't tremendously shitty, I'll probably love it the first time I see it, regardless.
Star Wars by nature is extremely well picked apart
Star Wars fans just EAT IT UP

As long as Jar Jar dies a gruesome, brutal death in the end, there will be no controversy, just universal praise.

Explain what makes OT juvenile
I hope luke isn't somehow evil in this continuing of the story

Dark, gritty, edgy Star Wars would be fucking shit.
GoT is awesome as fuck, but I wouldn't want to see Star Wars be like it. Nor would I want to see GoT be more like Star Wars. Both Sagas have their magical touch and they don't need changing (apart from Prequels).
By the way, Darth Vader is a inspiration for GRRM.

Grr I'm a big mean manly filmgoer and I only watch REAL movies with REALISTIC plots and SEX and GORE because anything less is for CHILDREN AND THE GAYS
star trek was good so im optimistic
Well George Lucas did say this was a film for the fans in a sort of disapproving manner
So I'm on board the hype train

every time someone says star wars needs to be more like the latest dark fantasy television epic i think of this

and i imagine a friendless dark jedi named BLOODGASH LONESUN who doesn't carry a lightsaber and never saves anyone and just uselessly broods all the time and then dies suddenly and pointlessly and nobody learns a single worthwhile thing about the universe or its spiritual connection with people other than how shitty it all is
thats kinda shitty to wish something is shit just so a franchise dies
i mean im tired of starwars as well but it would be cool if the world gets another good movie
Maybe, it's just so difficult because the universe itself has been done to death and oversaturated with numerous books, comics, movies, spin-offs, tv shows, toys, games, artwork, throw pillows, and just about any other marketable item ever.
It would take a true shake-up to make Star Wars feels satisfyingly fresh again but because the fanbase is so vehemently against anything new, I doubt it will happen. And honestly, I'm kind of in agreement with people like that. Why bother changing Star Wars to something its not? Why not just make some new sci-fi epic?
Bad or good, its new material so at least thats a okay in my book.
Kinda like Indiana Jones, the last one was considered pretty mediocre/bad but i enjoyed it nonetheless because it was another (and final) Indiana Jones movie.
as long as theres no creepy kid/teen romance, it will be great.

the anthology movies are the something new. Rogue one, movie about rebels trying to steal the death star plans behind enemy lines, A Han Solo movie, and a Boba Fett movie are all coming.
It seems like he's being humble. Not trying to say "oh it's the best movie I've ever worked on" or "I didn't enjoy the work environment".
He's allowing people to form opinions on their own, instead of listening to the actors of the film and having this image in their mind that it's going to be the best/worst thing they've ever seen.
