Fears of a humanitarian crisis are mounting as violence in Libya forces thousands of refugees to flee - and world leaders step up military plans for the country.
The concerns over the increasing numbers crossing the country's borders came as the US announced it had frozen $30bn in Libyan assets.
The United Nations says more than 100,000 people have left Libya in the past week and the Red Cross estimates around 1,000 refugees are arriving on Tunisia's border every hour.
Red Cross spokesman Joe Lowry, at the scene, told Sky News the situation was becoming increasingly chaotic.
"For past 12 hours, there has been a severe crush on the border, in the no-man's land between the two countries," he said.
"They are pretty angry because when they get here they are getting very little help."
Anyone wishing to help can go to www.WMClibya.com, a charity through which money can be donated to help with medical supplies.
Meanwhile, Colonel David Lapan said the US military was repositioning naval and air forces around Libya, as international demands intensified for an end to Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's 41-year rule.
"We have planners working and various contingency plans and I think it's safe to say as part of that we're repositioning forces to be able to provide for that flexibility once decisions are made ... to be able to provide options and flexibility," he said.
"We're still in that planning and preparing mode should we be called upon to do any of those types of missions, whether humanitarian and otherwise."
Lapan declined to give details about the types of ships or units being repositioned or how US commanders plan to use them.
He said the US now had two aircraft carriers in its naval command region that includes the Arabian Sea and Gulf, but does not have any carriers in the Mediterranean.
British Prime Minister David Cameron has also been discussing possible military intervention and revealed plans for a no-fly zone over Libya. Despite increasing pressure on Col Gaddafi, in an interview with America's ABC network, he laughed while refusing to acknowlege the protests against his regime.
He said: "All my people love me. They would die to protect me."
US ambassador to the UN Susan Rice labelled Col Gadaffi "delusional".
"When he can laugh while he is slaughtering his own people, it only underscores how unfit he is to lead and how disconnected he is with reality."
In Libya, witnesses say the town of Misratah and its airport are under the control of Col Gaddafi's opponents, according to reports.
So it begins.
Edit:
Someone made another thread earlier with more information. Though I didnt see it on the front page so I made my own thread. It has a little bit more information, and a disturbing twist; Gaddafi has chemical weapons, and isnt afraid to use 'em.

While i have no doubt this is a good thing, the possibility of occupation hinders this.
I can't imagine there being much of a fight, although I expect this to be made up mostly of special forces operations.
According to my friend who's uncle is in the military, Britains special forces are on standby for an invasion of Libya.
aaaaaaand nothing happens because no one wants to make the first move.

Gaddafi is the worst dictator ever; im sure for the libyan people american/UN/NATO occupation will be better than him still ruling.

Does this make me late? I didnt see it on the front after I refreshed a few times so I figured no-one had made a thread about it.
"All my people love me. They would die to protect me."
So then why are hundreds of thousands of people fleeing your country?
Oh yea its those damn hallucination pills...
America just put some well placed jdams.
anyone else think it's time for the marines to return to tripoli?

No, the Libyan people do not want a full force assault on their country, only support.
aaaaaaand nothing happens because no one wants to make the first move.
The UK seems to have made the first move by not hinting and saying that plans are being worked on.
I assume this will mainly be helping refugees and maybe some sort of defensive/support operations. They aren't going to just JDAM the royal palace and call things good.
There's nothing good about military action (besides evacuating civilians) in Libya.
Any U.S.-backed or -installed regime in the Middle East has fallen. We have to let the people decide their future.
Getting kind of silly with this world police mentality but ok, I just liked reading about civil wars that solved themselves rather than world police solving it.

When someone is bombing their own citizens there is a LOT of good that can come from military action. No one is saying that the US (It probably wont be them at this rate anyway) should try and install a regime there. The people in Libya clearly need help and I really cannot see them saying no to help to overthrow Gaddafi.
Man can you imagine being a rebel, who likely doesn't have much contact with the outside world at this point, and how fucking confused you would be when suddenly attack aircraft start helping you?

It looks like the people are willing to fight for their future and freedom. Provided they maintain their desire to fight for their rights as human beings, then I imagine they will install their own government.

No, the people don't need help. They've already managed to take several cities; Tripoli will fall in a matter of weeks.
Any US involvement can and will be used as propaganda by those opposed to the Libyan rebels.

Fuck that, imagine when Americans start flooding in. And they have robots with guns on them.

fucking al qaeda is on their side
who the fuck is against the rebels except for guddafi
As bloody as this may be, I think it it is better that the Libyans did this themselves than the US interfering and establishing a puppet government. Keep in mind that, contrary to popular belief, Gaddafi has been in relatively good terms with the US & Russia after 2003. It will be bloody, but hard work and struggle usually yields better results. Americans, of course, won't understand.
Why do people keep referring specificity to the US? They are not the only people who could deal with this, and it seems like they are not the people who are going to lead anything that sorts this out.
Although saying that, they seem to be the only people actually moving stuff around already.
We should just give air support, that alone would topple the regime.

British special forces already evacuated alot of people out, so have China. Plus Britain is also planning to put up an anti air thing across Libya.
If this is executed well it could be beneficial, but otherwise it could end up causing more problems.
I also hope it is a multi-lateral joint UN commission handling this, not just the US.

That seems to be what is being planned at the moment.
I did wonder when this would happen, shits gotten bad enough there.
I do hope they refugee's don't all end up in the UK. As harsh as that sounds we've got enough problems as it is.
Called it.
people love it when foreign army dudes w/ a superb military come out and help them when they want help
now iraq or a-stan they didn't want help so they didn't love it
