LOL, AT MULTIPLAYER
Rockstar’s Dan Houser says narrative is under-explored in multiplayer
Max Payne 3’s multiplayer mode will include parts of the game’s story elements, according to Rockstar vice-president of creativity Dan Houser.
Houser told Variety, “We wanted to put some elements of single player into the multiplayer so the multiplayer will have a lot more detail and have elements of story in it and have a sort of an immersive quality.”
So far Rockstar have revealed that Max Payne 3 follows Payne through Sao Palo, Brazil as he fights to protect a wealthy family against gangsters, kidnappers, murderers and the other unsavory characters.
As with many things Rockstar set out to achieve, weaving narrative elements into multiplayer is an attempt to tap an opportunity other developers might have overlooked, said Houser.
“We think that’s something that is underexplored in multiplayer,” he added.
Houser also said that he would like to see a greater emphasis on storytelling as a whole within video games.
“If games are to be the next major form of creative consumption, art, cultural expression or whatever the correct term is, then strong narrative has to be part of that,” he said.
Well, what about Left 4 Dead? Not that it felt very polished, but still. Seeing how this is from Rockstar, I'll be looking forward to this.
I think you accidentally a word in your title.
Well, story elements in mutiplayer aren't really all that foreign, just not explored as in depth.
You could even say all the CoD games contain story elements as they feature the battle of whatever war/fight between the opposing teams.
Although I'm interested to see what they can do as far as a story like multiplayer experience.
This generally isn't a good idea and has sloppy execution. Bioshock 2 tried this and was just contrived and silly, especially for a game where not many people care/are going to play the multiplayer anyway.

Was the singleplayer at one point not going to include a story?
Was the singleplayer at one point not going to include a story?
I've been under that impression since they revealed that Max Payne would be an overweight, out of shape John McClane.
Of course it includes a story, the singleplayer.
Multiplayer Max Payne, who gives a shit about that anyway? I could say I'm interested but not looking forward to it.
No one wants a drab multiplayer experience. Having some ties to the game it represents is always welcomed in today's standards.
Seeing as this is Rockstar who's talking, can't be anything but good
Um, Splinter Cell Conviction multiplayer?
Um, Splinter Cell Conviction multiplayer?
Yes but Conviction overall was a shit game and not a true Splinter Cell game.
Now the Coop for Chaos Theory! That was good.
I miss Chaos Theory's multiplayer. Fucking with the Mercs was great.
I missed it. I really wanted to, but I could never convince my parents to get me the game, nor means to play multiplayer.

Good, I missed story elements in MP 1 and 2.

i was waiting for that post, very creative.

I heard that's dangerous.
Somehow I don't think I could concentrate on an interesting narrative with 14-year-olds screeching into their headsets and bunny hopping everywhere.
I do hope the story element isn't;
"While Max Payne was doing this..." Because that doesn't even count as story, Call of Duty has story-driven multiplayer if that counts, so does Batman Arkham City.

Whats wrong with that? its fun like that, Kind of like bioshock 2s multiplayer.

Did Sam Lake write the game screenplay for Max Payne 3? He wrote the first two games, that is why they were so amazingly good

If I recall he has nothing to do with the new game
If I recall he has nothing to do with the new game
But Rockstar has asked the Remedy Entertainment as a whole for anything story-related, to make absolute sure that the story isadosfij
too lazy to finish my sentence but you get the point
I hope it works like counter coop from Perfect Dark.
Story elements?
Wow, Max Payne has a story? Never knew! Alert the presses!
Seriously though, what's with all the obvious news? First the "James Bond 23 will include action and suspense" and now this.
Actually read the article, it's about multiplayer tying into the singleplayer story. The title was the result of a typo.

It's nothing, it just bugs me. Unless the Multiplayer seriously factors into the singleplayer, then why have it as a feature?
This is super late, but I feel sad now that the HL community are the only ones getting thumbed at for a sequel :( Don't get me wrong I'm super stoked to see the next Max Payne game, but fans get to now join the group of people laughing at us HL fans.
