US CHIP giant Intel introduced on Wednesday a speedy new generation of chips that thwart film piracy and enable quick handling of data-rich video and games.
The second-generation Intel Core processors, referred to as 'Sandy Bridge', have been built into computers big and small, many of which will be displayed at the Consumer Electronics Show kicking off here on Thursday.
'This is the best product we've ever built,' said Intel chief executive Paul Otellini. 'We've shifted to processor-based graphics.' Building graphics computing into chips enables slick handling of games, images and video at a time when lifestyles are increasingly shifting to online entertainment loaded with data sent online.
'We are hooked on the Internet,' Intel vice-president Shmuel 'Mooly' Eden said while showing off Sandy Bridge-driven computers at a press event. 'PCs (personal computers) are no longer a luxury, they are a necessity.'
Sandy Bridge was welcomed by Hollywood and Bollywood film studios that have been reluctant to make prime releases available online to computers, where they could potentially be copied or shared without permission. Intel worked with major US and India film studios, including Warner Brothers, DreamWorks, Yash Raj Films and 20th Century Fox to craft copyright-guarding technology into the chips.
Sandy Bridge chips will be featured in 500 devices from mobile handsets to notebook and desktop computers, according to Intel. Sandy Bridge will represent more than a third of Intel's revenue this year, and generate US$125 billion (S$162 billion) in revenue for the PC industry, Mr Otellini predicted.
I don't get how this is supposed to stop piracy.
Thwarts piracy?
My arse.
Because the movie industry's anti piracy tactics are so overwhelmingly popular with the public.
And watch it somehow do more harm than good.
Intel Insider is a service that enables consumers to enjoy premium Hollywood feature films streamed to their PC in high quality 1080P high definition. Currently this service does not exist because the movie studios are concerned about protecting their content, and making sure that it cannot be stolen or used illegally. So Intel created Intel insider, an extra layer of content protection. Think of it as an armoured truck carrying the movie from the Internet to your display, it keeps the data safe from pirates, but still lets you enjoy your legally acquired movie in the best possible quality. This technology is built into the new Intel chips and will become even more important once wireless display technology like Intel’s WiDi become more popular, as it would prevent pirates from stealing movies remotely just by snooping the airwaves. WiDi enables you to wirelessly beam video to your big screen TV easily and in HD.
I'm glad I didn't wait for sandy bridges.
If what I just read, it's suppose to make movies and games run like Speedy Gonzales, and help us get new movies. Obviously it's gonna be On Demand.

The quad-core sandy bridges processor clocked at 2.8 Ghz is supposed to be 17% faster than the currently released i5-760 (which is also clocked at 2.8 Ghz)
Considering it's going to cost way more, It's probably still currently better to buy an old i5 and overclock it.
and at the very moment this news was released every pirate and cracker group pretty much all went

after all if it can be put in it can be taken out, disabled, bypassed, hacked, spoofed Et cetera Et cetera and so on and so forth Ad infinitum.

It doesn't cost way more - the i5 2500K is to replace the i5 760; it's priced at $217, clocked at 3.3, and can be taken to 4.4 on the stock cooler, I would say that's a pretty big improvement over the i5 760.
Also they tried to do hardware-DRM with HCDP too, and it got cracked
as in, don't worry about it, it's still an amazing line of CPUs and if anyone buys a 760 now I will laugh

It won't cost 216, that's just rumors, the 760 and 750 cost significantly more than that when they were released, why would they release two new products that cost the exact same as their current products? That makes no sense from a capitalism stand-point.
because it's meant to replace them that's why silly
some European retailers have them priced already
Right now, the 2500K costs £143.50 without VAT, which is $222 USD
Uh yeah, just helps me justifying buying a Phenom II X6 yesterday rather than a Sandy Bridge, especially when LGA 2011 is coming out the same year this new socket is releasing. Ridiculous.

That's because media companies paid them a lot so they can afford to release chips for cheaper.
here, why don't you check this thread out, it'll probably answer most of your questions

what
in all my years of using computers, not once have i heard anyone steal a movie by "snooping airwaves"
what the fuck

They always have inflated prices on the new processors so that the one olds can go on sale and sell out quickly. This move sort of screws retailers.

This makes sense.
Their analogy for this is fucking retarded and leads me to believe that this news source does not know fucking anything about computers and electronics at all.
Good thing Intel chips are over-priced, underpowered pieces of silicon turds.

sure whatever you say
Good thing Intel chips are over-priced, underpowered pieces of silicon turds.
lol that's funny considering how wrong it is

Overpriced, maybe a bit. Underpowered? Ahaha no.
It might be a bit underpowered if you only game, but if you do 3d or video editing, intel is the way to go.

Even for a stick figure drawing, that's a pretty awful image macro.

even in games it performs excellent
even in games it performs excellent
Compared to amd, it is a bit more pricey for same performance in gaming. Or atleast form what I've seen.

yes, AMD tends to be better in terms of price:performance, but I certainly wouldn't call Intel underpowered in gaming, especially when AMD's high-end Phenom II x4 compares loosely to Intel's mid-end i5 760

Yeah I agree. Sorry about that
Yeah I agree. Sorry about that
No, don't be; I'm sure you meant what I said anyway, it probably just came out wrong
[editline]wefe[/editline]
good god do I sound gay or what
And AMD sales skyrocket.
