• New Laptop - CD/DVD drive not reading discs

Right I've had this laptop for about 6/7 weeks now and I've only just tried putting a CD in to rip onto my iTunes (It's the first time I've used Windows 7 so I could be missing something vital here but I doubt it) But it just won't read any sort of CD or DVD that I put in it. And I can't access it in My Computer, there's no icon for the drive whatsoever. When I put a disc in I can hear the disc spinning and stuff and the green light flashes when I first put a disc in but nothing comes up at all. When I go into the device manager it says it's installed and working correnctly and what not, but it's not. I've uninstalled the driver and reinstalled it and it still does nothing... Any ideas?
Was Windows 7 pre-installed, or did you do an upgrade from XP/Vista? [editline]20th October 2010[/editline] Either Way: Check for updates, and install all the critical updates. If it came with Win 7, follow these steps: http://capitalhead.com/articles/windows-7-dvd-drive-not-working-problem-missing-disappeared-error-gone-not-found-not-recognized-in-x64-and-x86.aspx If that doesn't work, try the steps at the bottom of the page here: http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7hardware/thread/ec1d09f9-e76c-462b-91a5-8c0426381ebe
If you're familiar with the BIOS, go into it and check if the disk drive is detected in it. If yes, then its a software problem, if no, its a hardware problem like corrupt firmware.
I think I've found the problem. The drive hasn't been assigned a drive letter, however now it won't let me assign a damn drive letter to it arghhhh
