A student has sparked outrage over plans to lose his virginity in front of a crowd - in the name of ART.
Clayton Pettet, 19, is set to have gay sex for the first time in a gallery full of spectators for a project entitled "Art School Stole My Virginity".
He reckons his 'performance art project' will earn him rave reviews for challenging the idea of sexuality.
The deflowering is set to take place before an audience of between 50 and 100 in a space in Hackney, London.
Clayton and his friend will engage in safe sex until completion before asking the audience what they thought of the performance.
But second-year student at Central Saint Martins art school in London has been accused of cheapening sex and art the stunt which will take place on January 25 next year.
Clayton, who has been planning the event for three years, said: "The key thing about performance art is that it should only be performed once, and this is the ultimate once-in-a-lifetime performance.
"I've held on to my virginity for 19 years, and I'm not throwing it away lightly. Basically it's like I am losing the stigma around virginity.
"I want the audience to see if anything has changed between me and my partner.
"Since culturally we do hold quite a lot of value to the idea of virginity I have decided to use mine and the loss of it to create a piece that I think will stimulate interesting debate and questions regarding the subject."
Jesus christ what.
Really so this is art now. Next thing we'll know, people are willing to be decapitated as a art statement.
Art is subjecting blah blah blah.
It's crazy, sure, but I don't think it's anything to get silly about.

I think the mistake you're making is assuming art has any inherent value. Anything can be art but it doesn't mean it's good art.
I'll ask the question everyone is wondering: top or bottom?
This will go well with those arse hole pictures, except this time we can have a before and after exhibit.

And throwing it away for an art project isn't?
Too bad he gonna get called a disgusting whore and attention seeker, including by the people who believe their thinking is free and progressive.
Fantastic art.
I wonder how many will just show up to wank.
Fitting, since an Arts degree is only good for wiping your ass anyway, he'll finally have a use for it.
What idiot agreed to do this with him, too.
hot
This is actually kind of interesting. It's not something I'd care to see or whatever but the concept about it is kind of cool. Like he said, performance art should only be done once, and losing your virginity can only be done once, so it's an interesting and odd pairing. His other point, to ask the viewers if anything has changed between his partner and him is also good potential commentary on how a lot of people place so much value on the act of losing virginity. It sparks some very neat thoughts.

The more interesting implication is that people should realize that having sex is nothing weird, having gay sex is nothing weird, and that outside of personal preference of an individual, it doesn't have to be secret, hidden, or anything.

I wish someone would make a satirical drawing of two guys buttfucking in a room with pictures of assholes on the walls while people in nice clothing clap.

Also OP, this here is just as much of an art performance as this is or, your example, decapitating yourself.

This alone is already proving his and your point

Considering it's been in the planning for 3 years, I'd say that's still not throwing it away lightly.

Is it not attention seeker? It's in front of a crowd and he talked to the national media, that's as attention seeking as you can be. Nothing against this project, but seeking attention seems like a big part on this project, which makes sense considering the objective.

I think he means with a "look at me, I'm so edgy oh man I'm having sex in front of you AND its art!! haha look at me." But you're just meaning literally.
I'm just wondering if he'll be able to perform under the pressure of a live audience.

Oh, in that case ignore the post. It just seemed weird to not call it attention seeker when it's supposed to be, but with that meaning it's irrelevant what I said.

The self-immolation of the Buddhist Monks wasn't to spark controversy, but more or less to raise awareness in a form of protest.
This whole having sex in front of a live audience is just odd to me, and I think in reality it's just to garner attention. I personally feel that people should keep their sexual acts to themselves and their own private places. It doesn't matter if it's heterosexual or homosexual fornication, it should remain personal.
I don't know if this sounds barbaric or unprogressive of me, but the idea of having sexual relations in front of a group of people and calling it ~Artsy~ is just silly. I'm all for art being subjective, but it's like people are purposely trying to find new ways to put less effort into "Art".

So an act of sex and an act of violence are somehow similar?
I don't understand how it takes 3 years to plan out how you should get your ass fucked in front of an audience.
Probably a lot of people going "No dude you can't do that here"

Your post is the entire reason he's doing it though. Of course you're feeling challenged by something created to directly oppose the ideals that you hold. And doing that is, a different form, a protest of your ideals and an attack on the taboo of sex or homosexuality as well.

"Attention seeker" is today mostly used in pejorative way suggesting the person wants more attention than they deserve. Every artist is, to a degree, seeking attention, because art can't be evaluated without people paying attention to it. What I meant was that people will probably think that he doesn't believe this act is anyhow interesting or valuable and just hopes it gonna make a splash because it's sex.
I don't understand how it takes 3 years to plan out how you should get your ass fucked in front of an audience.
Because he most likely didn't take 3 years. It may have been in the works to at some point do for three years; but really, sex doesn't take planning and engineering to accomplish.
It's as simple as putting on a condom and going to work. Sure this is going to be for a performing arts performance, so it may have some choreography, but other than that this could not have taken 3 years of immense planning.

You honestly cannot say this with certainty. You have no idea what could have been involved with the preparation of it. How many institutions or privately-funded facilities do you think allow people to have sex in a public setting within them? Do you think its as easy as asking a museum "hey, yeah can we fuck here? is that cool?"
god damn it funion

That's the thing though, I don't see sex as a taboo; in fact, I'm completely open to sex and the discussion of sex. I just think that this is more or less a way to "shock" people because it's homosexual sex. He's purposely stirring controversy when it's completely unnecessary.
Sex and sexual relations don't need awareness raised; this isn't comparable to the Buddhist Monks Self-Immolating in protest.
