Justin Way was in bed with a knife. His girlfriend called a non-emergency number to try to get him into a hospital. Minutes later, cops shot him dead.
On May 11, Justin Way was drinking and threatening to hurt himself. His father, George Way, said his son was a recovering alcoholic and had been alcohol-free for five weeks.
“He just lost his job, and he had a setback,” he said.
Way’s live-in girlfriend, Kaitlyn Christine Lyons, said she’d caught Justin drinking a bottle of vodka, which she took away from him to pour out. She said he was drunk, lying in their bed with a large knife, saying he would hurt himself with it. She called a non-emergency number in an attempt to get her boyfriend to a local St. Augustine, Florida, hospital for help—and told them she did not feel threatened.
“My brother has been Baker Acted three times because he was threatening to hurt himself so I figured that would happen with Justin,” said Lyons. Florida’s Baker Act allows the involuntary institutionalization of an individual, and it can be initiated by law enforcement officials.
“The only person Justin threatened was himself and I honestly don’t think he wanted to die.”
Minutes later, two St. Johns County Sheriff’s deputies, 26-year-old Jonas Carballosa and 32-year-old Kyle Braig, arrived at the home, armed with assault rifles, and told Kaitlyn to wait outside.
“I thought they were going into war,” she remembered thinking when she first saw the large guns. Within moments, Justin was shot dead.
I think they could have found a better image than a paintball team if they were going for the fox news "exploding van" effect to demonize cops with.
Terrible waste of life. Feels like it's a common theme that police just don't have the expertise, training or tools to handle those that are suicidal or mentally ill.
How reliable is this site? How come there is absolutely nothing from the police's point of view? Why is this posted by a person with 1 post with the name "Realnews?"
This is nothing but another article that is designed to demonize police, it makes no attempt to be neutral and it's already sensationalist headline is made worse through the article by the use of emotional appeal where it isn't relevant or contextualized.
From reddit:
"On Facebook, Jonas Carballosa, the second deputy involved in the Justin Way shooting, once posted the following quote: “Most people respect the badge. Everyone respects the gun.”
This is exactly the type of shit that makes it impossible for me to have an objective view and see the story from both sides.
Picture looks like it was possibly taken during training or something maybe but yeah it's a weird choice of photo.

From what I know, Daily Beast is generally okay and are owned by the same people as Newsweek, though this seems to be the more tabloidy one to a degree, but I wouldn't accuse them of outright lies or anything.

Woow. That cop just had to quote De Niro from Righteous Kill. :v:

this is an image of the knife the guy was apparently holding

Guessing that the OP is a gimmick.
If he was shot dead, Id hope there was a reason. Suicidal or not, if he threatened either the officers or his girlfriend, or made a motion that looked like such, its a sad situation but an understandable one.
However If that quote is true and they shot him simply for disobeying orders, then it is a little more shady.
The story is credible. I read it a few days ago from some other source on my mobile.
It's kinda fucked up, and I of course, side with the family, but he did have a rather large weapon and was borderline. While I doubt he'd have assaulted them, the police aren't known for taking chances with weapons in play.
US Police: Shoot to kill, ask questions later.
florida cops above all love shooting people tbh
the hilsborough county cops have a notorious reputation
especially thanks to shit like this

Let's generalize a group of public safety personnel made up of inherently different people coming from all walks of life because the media says so

That isn't a knife, that's a full-on machete.

i'm not a cop hater at all, but florida officers have a tendency to utilize deadly force at higher rates than most states, and they rarely actually report civilian deaths to federal record keepers.
The available nationwide statistics are so inaccurate that the numbers for Central Florida police agencies from 1999 through 2002 reported only a quarter of the actual fatal shootings by police, a review by the Orlando Sentinel and WESH-NewsChannel 2 has found.
In other words, three out of four fatal shootings by Central Florida officers did not show up in federal reports for those four years.
Critics said there are no reliable figures on killings by police because some police agencies worry that a full accounting of deaths by officers would be embarrassing.
i mean the hilsborough county police wikipedia page literally has a misconduct section, lol. and given that florida is 2nd behind california in police induced fatalities it's really not much of a surprise. basically, cooperate with florida cops
edit:
i've lived in both florida and in connecticut for the majority of my life and i can say quite confidently that there's a significant difference between officers in hilsborough county and cops in connecticut
without a doubt.
i'm not saying these cops were in the wrong btw dude had basically a small shortsword lol
The girlfriend seems to have an interesting life. Her brother has been involuntarily committed 3 times and she was living with a suicidal alcoholic. When this sort of thing is so common in your life you use "Baker acted" as a verb, that implies a lot.

A person with a knife and not in shape can charge a police officer and stab them before the officer has time to draw their firearm. If the suspect is too close, even having a firearm drawn can be not enough to save them. The average minimum distance to safely neutralize a knife attacker has been determined to be about 21 feet, the 21 foot rule. At about 10 feet an officer probably can't get a shot off even if they are already ready to draw. If they have already drawn, they might get two shots off but quite likely can still be stabbed. Any closer and even being drawn won't save them. 15 is basically the bare minimum to draw and fire, and that isn't safely.

Tear gas? Electrick shocker? There's other options too. Negotiation?
They had no choice, he came at himself with a knife.
Tear gas? Electrick shocker? There's other options too. Negotiation?
"Let's deploy tear gas in this small, cramped space. If he can still even breathe after that, then we'll hit him with the taser and hope the thing even actually even works." There are numerous problems with these options. Tasers have to be drawn, have limited ranges, have a lot conditions where they flat out don't work. Negotiations break down, and the knife lodged in your lung is really going to be looking forward to yoi neogitating with it, making you stir the knife around inside and exacerbate the damage.
The "tase them in the leg" posts always show up.
They had no choice, he came at himself with a knife.
They had to stop him from killing him. If he was armed with a gun, this never would have happened.
suicide by cop, people. the cops clearly knew he was suicidal, and should've approached with caution. but you can't really expect better results from US cops, they'ree murderers
If he was suicidal and drunk, thereby further in an unhealthy state of mind, its quite plausible it just turned in to a suicide-by-cop.
