"Promote" is the wrong word when you start forcing kids to eat your lunches. "Force" is the correct word.
how anyone can consider most school canteen food healthy is beyond me
Most school canteen food is recycled stuff.
Why oh why would you ban packed lunches.
Most cafeteria food is awful in terms of health, but I remember kids in high school coming in with lunches composed entirely of cookies and chips so I can kind of see where they're coming from. Still, it should be up to the parents to decide, not the school.
Packed Lunches are more healthier and cheaper then going canteen all week
You can bring a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.
My school had some seniors a few years back who got everyone in the highschool to pack their lunches for a week straight. The school just about killed everyone because they lost so much money.
The school's responsibility is education first. Yeah, it's a good idea to make sure that kids are eating, but that should be the responsibility of the parents and the school should function as a fallback for the families that aren't able to provide for their kids.
That, and I bet like in the U.S., food from the cafeteria fucking blows.
School dinners are disgusting, and no one will even eat them.
Packed lunches are cheaper and more healthy too.
For fuck's sake, instead of trying to shove "healthy food" into our faces and at least give children more education about healthy eating instead.
The "Healthy food" that gets sold in schools usually tastes like shit or comes in really small portions.
I had/have pack lunches so that I can eat healthily and avoid eating the cheapest of the cheap burgers that they provide

the chicken patties and pizza was mine was bomb as fuck
but if you have a diet of that only you're going to die
I'm pretty sure during all of primary and secondary school I only ate in the canteen like 5 times in total.
And thats cause I had to for school trips and shit like that.
One example:
Muslim families often can't let their children eat at the school canteen because they do not offer halal food. The children either eat at home or get a packed lunch if they live too far away. Force children to eat at the school when they do not have the funds to propose a special menu leads to: thousands of children only eating french fries or salad with bread. Or water.
school dinners are so bad here our school doesn't even give them
I break in and they just tell me to get out
ps. if the "joke" is lost that's because most people I know refer to dinners as evening meals, well past school hours
In the UK, Dinner is the noon meal and Tea is the evening meal.

Only up north
My infant school used to force me to eat all of my lunch. The end result was an eating disorder for several months, and the sight of a Jam Sandwich makes me vomit 'cause of that.
The moral of the story is that school heads are fucking dictators when it comes to lunch.
School dinners have never really been that bad for me though I don't agree with taking the choice away. I don't know if it is really comparable to US school lunches, from what I hear they are basically on par with prison food.
Oh fuck off, school lunches are expensive, they still taste like boring shit, and are hardly healthy at all.
The people urging the head teachers are retarded, and if this were to happen it would be impossible to enforce.

When my school stopped selling fizzy drinks, people were selling them like drugs from their bags.

Dinner and tea are interchangeable although I think tea is usually earlier, the noon meal is lunch.
you can always claim your religious beliefs in not eating school dinners though, that has to work. ;)

No, where I am from we call the midday meal dinner and the evening meal tea
School Dinners were so bad that It probably had something to do with how I grew up only going for certain types for food. (This is a ridiculous exaggeration)

We call the midday meal lunch
But yeah this is stupid. I can't really speak for England but if it is anything like in Scotland then they are fucking awful. My school moved building about three years ago and got a new group of maintaince staff along with it instead of the nice cool old janitors. I got my damn cheese sandwidges confiscated because 'only food bought in school may be consumed on premises'. Needless to say I kicked up a fuss and they let me eat my lunch from then on.
Also, I am vegetarian and at the old school every so often the vegeterian option was 'chicken'.
I wish I was kidding.

same thing happened at my school, although it happened in Juniors instead so we were usually smart enough to figure out ways around it.
If they pay for everyone's food regardless of the students' financial well-being, increase the quality and broaden the amount of food they sell, and make it healthy and nutritious but still tasty enough so that students will want to eat, then sure, do it.
Sounds like they're not going to do that at all, lol. Places that don't allow you to bring your own lunches are awful, especially if they have a cafeteria that has garbage, overpriced, and literal cardboard food.

schools usually don't provide free meals, they're usually quite expensive
on a semi-related note, why don't they just make school lunch free, especially in lower income areas? i'm talking about the US because i have no idea how schools work in the uk. like, do you guys only go to hogwartz or something?
when my parents were saving up for plane tickets so we could go to my rich-ass uncle and aunt's rented resort in Jamaica, they refused to go to the grocery store for two weeks. starved my ass off during that time, and couldn't buy lunch because they were being stingy as fuck. that's small time compared to what a lot of poorer people have to deal with. going through an entire school day without getting some food in your system is the worst, and a lot of poor kids gotta deal with it because you have to pay like 5 bucks for a disgusting piece of soggy pizza that comes with old carrots and chocolate milk.
sure, blah blah blah budget, blah blah blah funding. but i'm pretty sure the comfort and well-being of the students is more important than funding a new iPad lab or replacing the 2 year old computers with brand new ones. oh, who am i kidding, the entire school system is fucked. they focus on trying to get DA BEST test scores so they'll get funding, so they can use money to give students more resources so they can continue to get test scores. tests.
