• Decent alternative to MacBook?
    37 replies, posted
I've been wanting to get a MacBook for a while but they are too expensive for the parts inside them. So I'll most likely get a pc laptop. What do you guys recommend? 1. Screen size has to be 13-15 inches 2. It has to be pretty thin/ look good. I don't expect it to look as good as a MacBook, but I don't want it looking like a brick. 3. Must be under 800 Australian dollars. This means I can't buy from newegg, tigerdirect or any other American sites.
Look around for laptops that are known to work with OSX without too much patching.
Sony Vaio is what you're looking for.
Sony Vaio is what you're looking for.
They have some very very nice screens.
I was actually planning to ask a very similar question to this, but I thought this clashed under the no "choose for me" threads rule.
You should check out lenovo.
You should check out lenovo.
Unless this is blatant sarcasm/trolling, then NO. I work with people in IBM that have these things and utterly hate them. I would have recommended a Macbook under an education discount, but failing that, a machine that's known to work nicely under hackintosh would be pretty damn neat.

[editline]02:00PM[/editline] Also what's with the OSX, isn't W7 pretty nice too?
I utterly hate everything too, and I don't like reasoning it either.
Eh? You do realise I'm talking about Lenovo laptops right?
Also what's with the OSX, isn't W7 pretty nice too?
It's nice, but I'd rather leave it for my desktop machine just personally. For a laptop, the performance of Snow Leopard is ace!
Nah, he hates windows. And you shall not know why.
Nah not at all, I just work with OSX for a living and it's enjoyable once you get used to it.

Asus UL series any
Eh? You do realise I'm talking about Lenovo laptops right?
No I thought you were talking about Acer for a while there. But please elaborate how you saw one at Wallmart that had some scratch on the touchpad and you realized how shitty every Lenovo laptop must be. Oh yeah did I mention how Apple sucks? I have the USB wire and it had the plastic from both ends broken. With Nokia cables I've never had this problem. I'd say Nokia is a lot better than Apple.
No I thought you were talking about Acer for a while there. But please elaborate how you saw one at Wallmart that had some scratch on the touchpad and you realized how shitty every Lenovo laptop must be.
That's called first impression.

Asus is by far my favorite brand of Laptops because of my experience with them. HP is pretty cheap on the build quality. Lenovo is a hit-or-miss either it's great or isn't particularly good. Just get something solid from either brand, they are usually pretty much the same.
. Lenovo is a hit-or-niss either it's great or isn't particularly good.
From my experiences it's usually depending on is the laptop the cheapest one offered or is it one of the more better models. Besides I've had MSI laptop for 4 years now and it's still working just fine. PSU burned out, but hey there's nothing a HP PSU and a soldering iron can't do. [editline]09:51PM[/editline] Also cheap+thin=brittle and noisy.

There are some HP laptops that are lovely and Unibody ish like a Macbook Pro, but I'd seriously try get a Macbook under education pricing if you can. I mean I admit you don't get as much computational performance per *LOCAL_CURRENCY* but a full laptop with a great OS (subject to debate on FP of course) and with 7 actual hours of battery life is a pretty fucking amazing package.
Dr Egg, that would be the HP Envy 15. Looks damn nice, but I think they're expensive. [editline]10:55PM[/editline] Yep, the cheapest one is AU$2,799
Wow, nice glare. Why the fuck they can't make a laptop nowadays that you can actually look at without seeing your ugly face.
Wow, nice glare. Why the fuck they can't make a laptop nowadays that you can actually look at without seeing your ugly face.
Lol. Gloss makes colors look more vivid.
Lol. Gloss makes colors look more vivid.
Yeah it does, but sadly my face makes it look too vivid.
Although they've been mentioned negatively in this thread once, I'd consider an Acer. My Aspire 5310 (£300 from laptopsdirect.co.uk) has been going strong for 2 years now. It's running Windows 7 64-bit on a 1.6GHz Intel Celeron SINGLE core, 2GB RAM and a nasty Intel GMA. Obviously I don't use it for gaming, only word processing or the odd movie but for the price it's been very faithful. It's been dropped several times and has several dings and dents yet still works excellently. It runs Windows 7 64-bit much better than it ran Windows XP SP3 32-bit. Acer made it very easy to get to the parts which matter, so upgrades are quick and simple. My only complaint is the battery life which has gotten worse over the years (the addition of a 250GB 7,200RPM WD Scorpio Black probably didn't help either). My boss at work has one of the old Aspire 20" desktop replacement models which now has around 6 seconds of battery life before dying. It's now used as a HTPC.
Lol. Gloss makes colors look more vivid.
It's fucking horrid to use in high light situations though.
Windowbook.
Windowbook.
mirrorbook
It's fucking horrid to use in high light situations though.
Yeah my TV is glossy. It doesn't help that it's right next to a huge window.

And that's coming from a mac user. (not a fanboy, just a user.)
So is having a cactus in your rectum :smugdog:
Disagree.
Lol.
Apple mice suck testicles. And that's coming from a mac user. (not a fanboy, just a user.) Disagree. Matte > Glossy
Luckily the only time I get direct light on my monitor is 7:30-8:00AM so I bought a glossy.
