• Compressing png files

File sizes can be a bandwidth problem on websites as any webmaster will tell you. The .png file seems to be the file of choice now for images because of it's lossless qualities and low filesize. What I've found is that programs save png's differently. If I save a png in paint it becomes large. If I use Photoshop it becomes medium sized. If I use Paintshop pro it becomes smaller still. Heres my issue. If one of my friends saves it in his paint which is exactly the same version as mine, it becomes smaller than all of the above. We have saved this image as a 16colours, png image file. Can you do any better and if so, how? The above file was saved on MS Paint as a 16 colour bmp file then reopened again in MS Paint and saved again as a png. Why is this file so small and how can we make it smaller?
It's because MSPaint will save it as an 8-bit image, most likely. I don't know much about Photoshop or PSP, but I've been using Paint.NET lately. It gives you an option to save your image as 8, 24, or 32 bit when saving it. Greyscale images can always be 8-bit without any loss of quality, so long as they don't have an alpha channel.
PNG files are already compressed. You won't get much luck compressing them further. Remember, if it's a photo or something like that, save as a JPEG, not a PNG.

wow thanks, i'll check that out right now
Firefox says Size: 0 kB (0 bytes) Dimensions: 0px * 0px (scaled to 957px * 342px) :tinfoil:

I forget how it works but it's usually on (very) small images.

I've never seen a .jpg bigger than a .png.. obviously it can happen as shown in Roast Beast's post. I would reccomened seeing if your other images are smaller in .jpg.
[img_thumb]http://filesmelt.com/dl/x3.png[/img_thumb]
I saved it so I could more closely examine the file size. (Firefox's indication of 0k is obviously wrong) 8000 bytes. Jesus christ.
Mine shows 8,026. Still, fuck yes.

If it's something photo-ish, where you wouldn't notice a slight distortion, JPEG is fine. If it's a diagram, or something along those lines, it's best to use PNG, as you would notice that distortion
