Macbook Pro 15" 2.4 GHz improvement over POS 3 year old Dell?

So I'm planning on majoring in photojournalism this fall, and i'm required to buy an expensive-ass MacBook Pro for photoshop and the like. The model I'm getting is the MacBook Pro 15" 2.4GHz (http://store.apple.com/us/configure/MC371LL/A?mco=MTc0Njg1OTY).
My question is this: how much better will this $2,000 Mac fare than the Dell Dimension 9200 I bought for $500 3 years ago? The specs on the dell are as follows: 1.8GHz Intel Core2Duo, 4GB RAM, Nvidia GeForce 7300, 160GB HD.
With my current (Dell) setup, I average about 17 fps in Portal with the shaders, HDR, and shadow detail on low at 1024x768. Pathetic? Yes.
How much better will the MacBook be?
Will it kill the thing if I try to run bootcamp or the like?
Is a $2,000 laptop with the specs of today's $700 PCs a wise investment?

You don't have to answer that one.
2 fold for the GPU, CPU would be about the same. You'll feel it.
edit:
No, it won't kill it if you run bootcamp. It should be fine.
I wouldn't really say it's a wise investment, but if you need it for your course then by all means get it. You can still use windows with bootcamp, so if you want to switch back to windows you don't have to buy another computer.

It depends on what you do. If all you do is surf the net and type and if appearance is important to you, get the mac. If you want a decent machine that will last more than 5 minutes and well cost 1/3 the price, stick with a PC. My advice would be to upgrade your CPU and graphics card. Get an e8400 or e8500. They're cheap nowadays and pack a powerful punch for gaming.
Mac is not better at annything exept for looks.
Its just the same as a PC it just has OSX on it and costs twice as much.
My opinion is that everybody should stay away from apple computers due to the fact that they add nothing of value but still cost alot more just for the apple logo and the sleek looks.
$6,955.85 with everything added D:
Fuck apple.
2000 dollars for THAT?!
Insane.
If you're going for a macbook, get a new one from ebay in an auction or something...
might get a bit of money off that way.
:sigh: i want a macbook, 1 because they are all better than my current laptop, and 2 because i just want one. Ebay is probably the best place to look though =/
Macbook for aesthetic beauty and smooth performance.

Superior batteries and video. That's why video editors and photographers use them.
