• Laptop for Business around £500

Hey there H&S! I'll just jump right to it.. My Dad is allowed to get a laptop around the £500 mark (No VAT) from his work, and I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions. He will mainly be using it for outlook, powerpoint and HD video playback, but he wants something that's relatively fast, has a nice screen (15.6"),isn't too heavy and most important of all, a good battery life. We have had a look, and we both like the look of these two: http://www.dell.com/uk/business/p/vostro-3550/pd?oc=n03s5511&model_id=vostro-3550& Dell Vostro 3550 - Seems alright, I don't like Dells that much but for the price it doesn't seem a bad package. http://www.ebuyer.com/337045-lenovo-thinkpad-edge-e520-laptop-nz3gvuk Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 520 - I like this; I know that ThinkPads are reliable and it has pretty powerful hardware. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated :)
Thinkpads are ridiculously tough but are let down by poor battery life.
Pepper;35234915']Thinkpads are ridiculously tough but are let down by poor battery life.
The T and X series get some of the best battery life you can get. The E series is the outlier in terms of Thinkpad battery performance. The Thinkpad is an E series, so it's not going to have the roll-cage and other stuff that forms the Thinkpad's reputation for durability, but in general it's going to be pretty solid anyway compared to other stuff at that price.

Also, isn't it possible to get larger batteries for them? I suppose they just add weight & cost thinking about it. The E-series is cheaper than the T and X series laptops, so yeah, they are built more cheaply. [editline]24th March 2012[/editline] You can get the expanded batteries for them, but you wouldn't be able to add stuff like the slice batteries or ultrabay batteries. [editline]25th March 2012[/editline] It looks like you can get the 9-cell batteries as relatively cheap upgrades to the 6-cell batteries in the E42x and E52x, but from what I can see they still fall a little short to the T and X series in terms of battery life. Not too badly, though. Try looking up the laptop you intend to buy on notebookcheck and notebookreview. The Edges get fairly respectable battery life, to be honest.

Notebookcheck rates the Vostro better in most cases, including build quality, and the other ThinkPads are out of budget, so I think we will settle on the Vostro 3550. Thanks guys!
