• Europe alarmed by US surveillance
The EU is demanding assurances that Europeans are not having their rights infringed by a massive US surveillance programme. Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding plans to raise the concerns with US Attorney General Eric Holder on Friday. Last week a series of leaks by a former CIA worker led to claims the US had a vast surveillance network with much less oversight than previously thought. The US insists its snooping is legal under domestic law. The Obama administration is investigating whether the disclosures by former CIA worker Edward Snowden were a criminal offence. Mr Snowden's employer, defence contractor Booz Allen Hamilton, said on Tuesday it had fired the 29-year-old infrastructure analyst for violating its ethics code. US officials say the snooping programme known as Prism, revealed in last week's leaks, is authorised under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (Fisa). It gives the US National Security Agency (NSA) the power to obtain emails and phone records relating to non-US nationals. But details about the individuals targeted under the act remain secret, and there are concerns the NSA is overstepping its powers. Documents leaked to the Guardian and Washington Post newspapers claimed the US authorities had direct access to the servers of nine major US technology firms, including Apple, Facebook and Google. Mr Snowden told the Guardian that individual operatives had the power to tap into anyone's emails at any time. Although the firms have denied granting such access, saying they agreed only to legal requests, US officials have admitted Prism
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-22857062
Yeah read about it in a danish newspaper. Im quite suprised that our polititians arent ready to sell our freedom to america, They are usually preoccupied with sucking on americas dick.
Glad to be in the EU. I really hope they are truly concerned though, and not just talking bullshit to calm down the public.
They are usually preoccupied with sucking on americas dick.
Same with Sweden..
It kind of feels weird having a lot of my online services dependent on a company who spies on people in the name of America.
It kind of feels weird having a lot of my online services dependent on a company who spies on people in the name of America.
Well here in denmark i might aswell, Because our internet providers are legally required to store all net traffic data for a year. The difference from america is that the government cant look at this data outside of a crime investigation, meaning they need to already have a crime, suspects and suspicions. I think that is a far better way of doing it.
Most likely talking bullshit. Not even the EU has the balls to stand up to the US.
Yeah, would probably not surprise me too much if they were doing the same thing.

Or a private company filming its own property. What i have a problem with is being spied on inside your property, cyber or not.
Mr Snowden's employer, defence contractor Booz Allen Hamilton, said on Tuesday it had fired the 29-year-old infrastructure analyst for violating its ethics code
Hah, pretty ironic
Merkel says she's gonna visit Obama and ask wtf's the deal with PRISM. I don't think we'll be getting anything of substance out of it, but as a political move it sure does the job.
PRISM is mostly involved with tracking foreigners, so Europe ought to be more alarmed than the average American, I suppose.
Most likely talking bullshit. Not even the EU has the balls to stand up to the US.
Funny you should say that, the EU has flexed its muscles to the USA from time to time just to prove they can (and I like it)
One of the things the EU's good at is sticking to the human rights it's defined. There've been countries wanting to enter for years, but at the same time unwilling to get rid of the death penalty, and the EU simply refuses them. It's nice.
Europe is concerned with our surveillance? Ha.
Most likely talking bullshit. Not even the EU has the balls to stand up to the US.
yeah and what the fuck is US going to do if all of EU tells USA to shove it up their collective ass? an angry letter telling us how horrible commies we are for having free healthcare and education, that's what is all going to happen
they'll try to liberate us from our filthy communist nations
we are literally worse than stalin
"US officials say the snooping programme known as Prism, revealed in last week's leaks, is authorised under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (Fisa). It gives the US National Security Agency (NSA) the power to obtain emails and phone records relating to non-US nationals." That makes no sence.... the FISA act they made themselfs gives them power to snoop over everyone else.... so basicly they made a law giving themselfs permission to snoop other countrys? okey!, i give myself permission to snoop into the presidents house and affairs!
I'm actually happy living in EU because of this. We have EU that actually protects our rights. (I hope so at least)
how dare we pay taxes and not pay outrageous sums of money for education or healthcare
These people man, how the fuck do they dare to use the healthcare to save themselfs from the brink of death without paying a dime. Fucking selfish cunts. If you don't have money to pay for that precious surgery then you deserve to die.
I have a feeling the EU has its own version of PRISM
If you consider yourself objective, listen to this.
It has begun.. http://trollthensa.com I wonder if this will have any effect.
It has begun.. http://trollthensa.com I wonder if this will have any effect.
If anything is a indicator, it probably won't.
I have a feeling the EU has its own version of PRISM
OH SNAP, oh man you have a feeling, now EU is confirmed to be 100% as shit as USA. Thank you for opening my eyes to this truth
I'm sorry that my government is a bag of dicks, Eurobros.
It has begun.. http://trollthensa.com I wonder if this will have any effect.
Facepunch should actually try this who knows it could be full of lulz.
Facepunch should actually try this who knows it could be full of lulz.
Oh man, I saw the original post of the stuff that they're going to be sending.
US and Europe will strike a deal to mutually spy on each others citizens
Oh man, I saw the original post of the stuff that they're going to be sending.
Me too. It was actually really funny, it didn't say anything bad except the key words that the NSA looks for.
