The substantial number of suicidal deer plaguing Mitchell County, Iowa has pushed local officials to warn motorists of the hazard presented by wildlife at the end of their rope (archived). The hazard to motorists is so severe that in spite of protests that the signs were insensitive to persons who had experienced suicide, the hazard presented by suicidal deer becoming "an hero" fighting against bipedal motorists and the frequency of past events necessitated the warning remain as is
From the actual article:
"“Some in the mental health community even feel as the sign could cause trigger issues in those who have personal experience with the suicide of loved ones or those who have experienced suicidal thoughts in the past,” Paulus said.
Mitchell County resident Alexander Schmidt, read a letter of concern regarding the sign. Within his letter, he called out the sign as “being in poor taste and inconsiderate to those who had experienced a loved one’s suicide,” stressing the power words can have and the sign could be hurtful or even traumatic."
So you prefer having a deer potentially kill itself right in front of you? Get fucked.
So you prefer having a deer potentially kill itself right in front of you? Get fucked.
hitting a deer at high speeds can really fuck up your car and potentially kill people as well
Are they really suicidal or just being...you know...deer
Anyways I think it's funny as hell
So you prefer having a deer potentially kill itself right in front of you? Get fucked.
I agree, but honestly why not just make it a normal old deer crossing sign, or "Watch for deer" or something? Win/win?
All the better reason to Mad Max the fuck out of your car before a family vacation.
I agree, but honestly why not just make it a normal old deer crossing sign, or "Watch for deer" or something? Win/win?
A deer deliberately jumping in front of you is different than one stumbling out by accident.

I can't imagine deer are worse than kangroos.
I remember being in Australia many, many years ago in a 4WD with my mother driving in the middle of the night on a road with no lighting.
Driving along normally when all of a sudden
*bounce* *splat*
Fortunately the 4WD had a "roo-bar" which protected us from the impact. Although I do feel sorry for the kangaroo.
I also know a guy that was killed when his ATV hit into a camel in the middle of the night. Camels undoubtedly move much slower than deer (I would assume so anyway).
I kind of find it hard to believe that the deer are actively committing suicide in comparison to just running out because they're stupid and don't know the appropriate times to cross.
Either way, a deer crossing sign should suffice???? Suicidal or just stupid, they're gonna die and your car can get fucked either way. There's no difference.
Do we need deer psychologists now?
so is there like a proven thing that they're actually committing suicide by car or what
i can kind of see that putting up a sign that says "SUICIDAL DEER" might make you a lot more aware than "DEER CROSSING" though. i'd definitely be a lot more on my toes if i saw this sign.

It's the fastest way to tell people "deer aren't afraid of cars and won't move out of the way"
Road signs need to contain as few words as possible
It's unclear whether they're saying the cars are being targeted by deer, or they're trying to make the signs more noticing this way. I'm seeing conflicting stories when I search for the story.

I guess it's a sign that's not for normal deer behaviour.
So that people that live somewhere where deer are common(and as such deer crossing signs), also need to take extra care in watching out for deer.
I wanted to learn more about the psychology of the deer. Instead I read about offended people. :/
When I think of people hitting deer, I used to think of a deer darting across the road at the wrong time. However, both of the times that I've hit one, they were walking across the road in large groups, and were completely unafraid of incoming cars.
Just make the sign say "Watch for Deer"
Making it say "Suicidal Deer" is in really poor taste and is wholly unnecessary imo

Psychology of deer?
It's not a bunch of whitetails going "oh, my doe left me for a buck with a bigger rack and I can't even drink my sorrows away because we can't hold glasses with hooves, better end it all".
It's just animals being too stupid/acclimatised to cars getting smashed by a ton of metal travelling 70 miles an hour.
Obviously most of you don't live anywhere near deer, deer crossing signs are pretty much on every single road or highway where I live. You basically have to be on the watch for deer at all times while driving, deer crossing signs are pretty much ignored because you see them constantly. Putting out a extreme deer warning sign sounds like exactly what needed to be done in this situation.
I'm not sure "Suicidal Deer" sounds professional enough to be a government installed road sign though.
Just make the sign say "Watch for Deer"

Not if the animals are deliberately jumping in front of your car. Then it's completely justified imo :v:
Deer signs are all over the place here too. But so are plenty of other signs? Just because they're frequent doesn't mean that motorists shouldn't be paying attention.
I can understand if you can't SEE the sign, then that's the fault of the city or county, but if it's right there and indicates that YEAH that's a deer crossing area, then it's really on the driver to show common sense and slow down and be cautious.
Alternatively, putting flashing lights on the signs would be better than putting "suicidal deer".
But ultimately there's nothing stopping motorists from becoming acclimated to signs as long as they're ALWAYS there. People who always drive that way and feel it necessary to ignore all signs and signals are gonna do it either way.
I have to admit I laughed at this picture (source: fark.com)

Why not just something like this:

?
It works pretty well over here I suppose
I understand the whole being sensitive about suicide thing. But if you can't hear or see the word suicide without it triggering your PTSD, you better not go out in public in general, or watch TV, or movies. The word "suicide" along with the context is not really taboo, you will hear and see it unless you block all outside contact. You likely need treatment for something if you can't handle a street sign.
My father has had to write off three separate cars because of deer. That being said, he lives in a heavily wooded and mountainous area so they are pretty common.
Having never been suicidal I can't really comment on the wording, but it would certainly make me more alert for deer.
Are they really suicidal or just being...you know...deer
Anyways I think it's funny as hell
Yeah, how can they tell it's a suicidal deer? They can run into the road for a variety of reasons, like evading a predator.
hitting a deer at high speeds can really fuck up your car and potentially kill people as well
Or kill people when the motorist swerves hard left and hits someone headon. The sign stays, the sensitive snowflakes can go fuck themselves.

We already have those. Doesn't work very well. People are so used to them that they don't consciously notice them anymore.

I don't like this attitude. There's no reason to not keep things out of places that don't need them just because they're everywhere else.

Lol, drivers being oblivious morons isn't the fault of the sign. Pay attention when you're on the road.
To all those wondering about the psychology of deer, read the actual article. The sign isn't being literal. They just chose unusual wording so that people would notice the sign and pay attention more. The thread title is extremely misleading.
As someone who lives in a wooded area, deer crossing signs are really common and so are deer-related accidents. The signs are practically just scenery at this point, so one with special wording on it to get your attention sounds like a good idea to me. I think the phrase is perfect; it makes you think about deer jumping in front of you on purpose, which is practically what they do since they're so fucking stupid. Animals like to wait until the last possible moment to cross the road in front of an oncoming car, which is why they get hit so often.

most people in the real mental health community and not the tumblr mental health community agree that avoidance therapy just makes the problem worse anyway
