British police are arresting people in the middle of the night if they have made racist or anti-Muslim comments on Twitter following the murder of a soldier by two Muslims in Woolwich, London. Three men have so far been taken into custody for using Twitter and Facebook to criticize Muslims... The police and Muslim groups have said that there have been anti-Muslim episodes in many parts of the country, the most common involving derogatory messages on social media sites like Twitter and Facebook. Two men were detained in the middle of the night after they expressed anger at Muslims on Twitter.

-Benjamin Flatters, 22, charged for making 'malicious comments' on the social networking site -Another man warned about his conduct on social media -Two men released on bail after comments made on Twitter -Police say people should be careful about what they write on twitter as the 'consequences could be serious'
http://finance.yahoo.com/news/britain-police-arrest-twitter-facebook-145758582.html
And if this isn't a two way street it'll cause an even worse backlash than it already will.
And if this isn't a two way street it'll cause an even worse backlash than it already will.
The more radical sites that are discredited by everybody [Dailymail, etc] tell stories of Muslims burning flags while people are being arrested for yelling at them.
While saying anti-Muslim things/racist things is still a dick move, is this not a violation of freedom of speech?
While saying anti-Muslim things/racist things is still a dick move, is this not a violation of freedom of speech?
Not necessarily, afaik "freedom of speech" a strictly political freedom in a lot of European countries.
Well, considering how attacks on muslims have increased ten-fold ever since, I think its a good move to regulate comments that incite/promote violence, whoever does it, muslim or non-muslims.. So much for free speech :I People are just using incidents like this to push draconian laws so they can start arresting people further down the line for "innapropriate political opinions"
So much for free speech :I People are just using incidents like this to push draconian laws so they can start arresting people further down the line for "innapropriate political opinions"
When it escalates like it has, you need to do something.
Good intentions, bad execution.
I think there's a difference between "criticizing muslims" and "inciting violence against muslims". Doing the latter is dangerous and should in many cases be considered illegal. The former is usually done by dumb people, but dumb people who nonetheless should have their speech protected. It's one of the strongest cornerstones of western democracy, and one we should be damn proud of. It would be a true shame if we were to arrest people simply for expressing unpopular opinions.

I think the thread title should be changed to "UK Government Arrest Twitter And Facebook Users If They Incite Violence Against Muslims" really.
I'm pretty certain the EU Declaration of Human Rights states that free speech is only allowed if it is not made with intention to violate another vital right of another individual or group of individuals; normally however, it focuses on the latter (unless it's being said in real life, like across the street or something). Most Britons are fine with it, since you won't actually get into trouble unless you say something that's quite obviously bigoted. [editline]27th May 2013[/editline] Similarly, newspapers are 'free' to post anything they like in their papers, as long as it does not incite hatred. In this respect, the Daily Mail treads a very fine line.
This inciting hatred thing has gone too far. Non of those messages are serious.
If a Brit says something about a Muslim its not a use of Freedom of Speech its Hate Speech and racist and there for is arrested. Any Muslim who speaks out against Britain and its populace, its Freedom of Speech and preaching a religion. FUCK OFF.
What are the freedom of speech laws in the UK?
Strictly speaking, our only free speech law is the European Convention on Human Rights. Non Codified Constitions and what not.
I dislike this act because it's violates the freedom of speech, although these people do need to stop. the action of a few loose screws does not mean that all of them are the same. This is like the same ripple effect and stupidity that is shown like the shooting of that elementary school that started the whole "ban all guns" debate over and over again, That famous high school shooting that causes a spark to "ban all violent video games", and all that bullshit. If you want something to blame, blame your countries lack of mental help or lack of an initiative to prevent this from happening in the first place, not the religions, the weapons, or the video games.
What are the freedom of speech laws in the UK?
There aren't any. It has been reformed and now called "Hate Speech Laws".

And what about your extremist preachers? They aren't getting arrested? The main reason their are extremists and radicals in Britain is because we don't stop them at the source with the preachers.

There is a difference between freedom of speech and hate speech, threats of violence or inciting violence. Anyone who thinks Muslims are exempt from the law is probably a Daily Mail reader and completely disconnected from reality. Or retarded. Or both. Dunkace for example. The police will target anyone who makes threats of violence, and at this point there are obviously going to be a lot more native Brits who are making threats than Muslims. Muslims have nothing to be angry over. Edit: And Chekko.
This is a load of shit and you know it.
yes it is
And what about your extremist preachers? They aren't getting arrested?
What are the freedom of speech laws in the UK?
We don't have freedom of speech we have freedom of expression and it's limited in some circumstances, such as offending somebody.
Article 10 Freedom of expression 1Everyone has the right to freedom of expression. This right shall include freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart information and ideas without interference by public authority and regardless of frontiers. This Article shall not prevent States from requiring the licensing of broadcasting, television or cinema enterprises. 2The exercise of these freedoms, since it carries with it duties and responsibilities, may be subject to such formalities, conditions, restrictions or penalties as are prescribed by law and are necessary in a democratic society, in the interests of national security, territorial integrity or public safety, for the prevention of disorder or crime, for the protection of health or morals, for the protection of the reputation or rights of others, for preventing the disclosure of information received in confidence, or for maintaining the authority and impartiality of the judiciary.
Also
(1)A person who uses threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour, or displays any written material which is threatening, abusive or insulting, is guilty of an offence if— (a)he intends thereby to stir up racial hatred, or

Edit: And Chekko.
That stupid Chekko and his wish for equality. What a retard.
