• Linksys Router NAT setting problem.

We have a Linksys Wireless G Broadband router at my house. I have a 360, and my little brother has one too, and we both connect via direct ethernet connection. Problem is, the router always messes with our NAT settings, and it's basically impossible for us to both be online, with both having an 'OPEN' setting. Usually one of us will be open, the other moderate or strict, so the person who's playing has to stop for the other to reset the router/modem. I have to resort to keeping my xbox on almost all the time to keep the OPEN setting, because when it switches, i have to go through this whole thing of plugging my cord directly into the modem, connecting to xbl, then back to the router and trying it. I've tried to go into router settings, but I don't know jack squat about that technical stuff of networking. Anyone have an easy solution to how we can both have an OPEN nat setting that won't change every time we turn off our xbox?
for real i'd be eternally grateful to anyone who can solve my problem.. if there's nothing i can do, tell me, but if anyone knows networking really good, please help
It sounds like XBL uses specific fixed ports to communicate with the master XBL servers, which would cause the problem. You can't have two services on the same IP address (the router) using the same port. Microsoft probably never envisioned that a single household would have multiple XBOX 360s and made design decisions as such. I'm not totally sure about my hypothesis, so if someone else has multiple 360s in their house, feel free to correct me. The only solution I can think of would be to do two things (in order): 1) Call up your ISP and request an additional IP address be allocated to your cable modem. These are usually cheap (like $5 extra a month) 2) Buy a 4 port switch and put it between the cable/dsl modem. Then plug the Linksys router into the switch. Then plug one 360 into the switch, and another 360 into the router. This should give each XBOX 360 its own unique IP address (assuming you bought another) and it should fix the problem.
i'll definitely try both those and see how they work, thank you
