Really, it's about time- I'm all for polishing the game until it's done, but if we're expecting something in the first half of the year it's kindof overdue. Can't complain too much about it, however, considering most releases these days are half done.
FINALLY.
After all those clothing line releases, I've been waiting for news about the actual game.
Trying not to get hype because when you wait for things time seems to go slower.
Please, please, please let this be around the corner. This is really the one game I'm waiting for this year.
Guess it's time to get a PS4
Quick question if i get this game, do i need to play other MGS games in order to play this one?

not necessarily, but parts of the story might seem foreign or not easily understandable unless you've played the other games in the series, though how much this might be the case we'll only know at release. It's technically a prequel as far as timeline goes.
Wishful thinking to hope it's before summer?
We are currently at Defcon 2, the next step is going Nuclear.

Yes. This game is probably going to be the one that links the stories of the Big Boss and Solid Snake, and will no doubt be filled with references to the other games all over the place.
You really should play the other games anyway, as they are pretty much some of the best games ever made.

Oh yeah a game/movie/book being the fifth in the series is always a good place to start.
No, Start at MGS1 (or MG1 if you want) and play in release order. MGSVPP is a sequel to MGSVGZ which is a sequel to MGS: Peace Walker which is a sequel to MGS4.
Don't play Portable Ops it's shit and barely canon. Don't play Twin Snakes either it's also shit.

"hey guys should I start with the 5th or the 1st Harry Potter book?"
no you start with Metal Gear Solid 1 and play your way up. Shit won't make sense otherwise. If you have a PS3, pick up a new copy of the MGS:Legacy Collection which has them all, save for Ground Zeroes and obviously TPP.
MGS1 -> MGS2 -> MGS3 -> MGS4 -> MGS:PW -> MGSV:GZ -> MGSV:TPP
I don't see why people are ripping on deathtrooper, realistically you should play the franchise as Metal Gear Solid 3, Peace Walker, MGS 5, MGS 1, 2, 4 since that's the order of the story.

Thats the worst way to do it. You miss out on so much little details here and there from the other games.

No you shouldn't. Each game has references to the last that would make no sense if you play them chronologically.
Play them in the release order, as that's the order you would have played them in if you got them when they came out.

No that's completely retarded. It doesn't matter what order the story goes in, since many of the reveals towards the end of 3, rely on stuff from 2. Same for the other games. Even them it's awesome to see how the gameplay evolves with the series, by you know, playing it in release order.

No, all the games in release order mention things from the one before it. Peace Walker takes place before 4, but its plot still relies on it.
This is the best chart for figuring out which games to play in which order.

although it says Portable Ops is optional, I'd just skip that one all together. And with MGR:R's placement, i'd just play that whenever since it really is super optional and is a really different game.

Under no circumstances listen to him
-snip-
someone answered my question, don't play them in chronological order apparently :v:
After 3 years on ice, release date announcement at GDC, should be the perfect warm up.

I really can't complain about the wait to be honest. Video games take time I guess, it's lot like they're only porting something for almost two years.

Peace Walker is not a sequel to MGS4. MGS4 is near the end (THE end if you don't include MGR:R). Peace Walker is a sequel to 3, in terms of story.
But yeah, don't be like me; play them in release order.
I forget who, but someone mentioned that the MGS4 release date was announced about two months prior to it's release. Let's hope for a similar outcome. :)
I'd rather watch a video summary of each of the games. It's asking a bit much to go out and buy a ps3 and several games that each probably take a week to finish just so I could play this game.

You play EVERY game series in chronological order. No exceptions. Always.
edit: I meant the chronological order of the game releases.

Bad advice for metal gear, You'll be missing out on so many little nods and references to the other games.
Calling it now, they'll announce the long awaited chicken camo.
