The new changes are available to those who opt-in Origin’s beta programme. NeoGAF member SmartWaffles has received the update, and decided to take a couple of screenshots of the thing, and it looks a lot better than it does now. As you can see in the gallery below, the design is now based almost entirely on tiles, a bit similar to the Xbox One design but definitely less complex. The chat/friends list button have been moved to the bottom, and it presumably still opens a separate window. The game library part has also been reorganised, and you can now see very clearly when a game is downloading or updating, and if you have any friends currently playing – right on the tile. The store has been better integrated into the app, and now shows the list of available games much better, building on the same design changes in the library section. If you want to get the update now, make sure you’ve opted-into Origin beta releases from the client’s options menu, and restart it once you’ve made the change.
https://www.vg247.com/2016/07/28/your-ea-origin-client-is-about-to-look-a-whole-lot-better/
A very clean design, I like it.
Looks like Spotify
Can we have the circle avatars discussion again? Ubisoft had them in uplay, they're now back to squares
Can somebody wake up Valve?
Can somebody wake up Valve?
Why wake valve up when you can let the community do skins for steam ;)
Why wake valve up when you can let the community do skins for steam ;)
Because the backend for STEAM is still absolute trash, no matter how pretty your skin is, it's still fundamentally steam in it's shit form.
Can somebody wake up Valve?
Pretty sure a new redesign should come sooner or later. Steam had its classic design from 2004 to 2010 and it's been 6 years since the current version was introduced.
Looks pretty damn good. How do you opt-in? Or rather, where?
Because the backend for STEAM is still absolute trash, no matter how pretty your skin is, it's still fundamentally steam in it's shit form.
The whole interface language format is full of inconsistencies I appreciate that the application is as solid as it is. I'd hate to see it turn into one big CEF window. It's already used for browsing, but I see many applications head that way for their interface and it's not pleasant Even a refractor of the whole thing would be beneficial to some degree
Looks pretty damn good. How do you opt-in? Or rather, where?
It's already rolled out, just start Origin.
It's not bad tbh, I'm so glad Origin and GoG are no longer terrible because Steam needs competition.
It's already rolled out, just start Origin.
Oh, cool. Nevermind then.
Haven't really had a good look until now, has origin always been using qt?
Hilariously enough, Origin started out as just the EA Download Manager for games you bought online like the Sims 3. Then they contracted out to another company and EADM became Origin so the core part, the downloader, has always been solid.
Can we have the circle avatars discussion again? Ubisoft had them in uplay, they're now back to squares
Circle avatars are a blight upon modern design could be worse tho, they could be 16x16 :nope:
I actually really like circle avatars. Dunno why but they're a nice change over the square format.
Origin is pretty great. It's biggest problems are that it doesn't have steam's library and you don't have your friends from steam on it. So while steam is something that is usually always running, origin is only booted up when I want to play a game
I actually really like circle avatars. Dunno why but they're a nice change over the square format.
I find them very restrictive. Not a lot of pictures work well with the format
It's not bad tbh, I'm so glad Origin and GoG are no longer terrible because Steam needs competition.
I agree Steam needs competition but Publisher-specific distribution services like Origin and Uplay aren't good competition.
I agree Steam needs competition but Publisher-specific distribution services like Origin and Uplay aren't good competition.
I agree but Origin and GoG aren't publisher specific anymore.
Why wake valve up when you can let the community do skins for steam ;)
not only, that if you play a 3rd party csgo server you're account may be fucked

They've always worked on it internally - but the activation system they used to use, first with Battlefield 2142 was not their own.
can you still change box art to .gifs? i really liked that [editline]13th September 2016[/editline] nope, "stay tuned'
I prefer the old design, but this looks fine and totally usable. [editline]14th September 2016[/editline]
I agree Steam needs competition but Publisher-specific distribution services like Origin and Uplay aren't good competition.
They're not platform-specific, it's just that nobody uses them because Steam's more widely-used.
They're not platform-specific, it's just that nobody uses them because Steam's more widely-used.
Which means they're publisher specific. They only have a handful of games from ubisoft and a few other publishers. They're not like GoG or Steam where they're a complete mixed bag. The only exclusivity they have against steam is EA games, which are publisher specific to origin, which is why it's not viable competition.
Yeah sure, Origin is publisher specific and that's exactly why you can buy The Witcher series on Origin........ c'mon man
Still prefer Origin to steam. If I could transfer all my games I'd do it in a heartbeat.
EEEHHHHH. A much more responsive design but a lot of it bugs me. As nice it is, its still absolutely no reason to jump ship. Origin is just a horrible place overall.
I've really only used it for Battlefield 1 but I don't see Origin as a horrible place at all. Sure, there are not a lot of games on it, but it's got all the features from Steam I care about and honestly I don't mind using it for games only on it. Still, if Steam ever kicked the bucket (which I'm extremely sceptical of happening for now) I'd rather go to GOG than Origin.
