The Senate on Tuesday confirmed Betsy DeVos to lead the Department of Education by the slimmest of margins, capping off a rocky, high-stakes fight for President Trump's pick.
Vice President Mike Pence cast the rare deciding vote on DeVos, breaking a 50-50 tie after Republican Sens. Susan Collins (Maine) and Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) became the first senators to oppose a Trump Cabinet pick, joining all Democrats.
Pence is the first vice president ever to cast a decisive vote on a nominee. The last time a VP broke a tie in the Senate was 2008, when then-Vice President Dick Cheney voted on a tax adjustment plan.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) made a failed 11th-hour plea Tuesday morning for a third Republican to buck DeVos and sink her nomination.
“It’s the Republican side demanding a vote for an unqualified candidate,” the Senate’s top Democrat said. “I hope against hope that another Republican will have the courage … [to] join us.”
Schumer suggested Republicans are privately saying they wish Trump picked someone else, calling DeVos a “negative trifecta.”

What are you fucking smoking?
Just watched it, lots of smiles and laughs after it went through. I guess they are glad that all those donations didn't go to waste.

He's trolling, he knows people here hate her, there's no fucking way anyone who isn't a bribed asshole could possibly think this is good.
Boy I can't wait for disabled students to be fucked over!
Wait what is she gonna do to disabiled students?
This is a good day for America. Sessions will be another step up.
What the hell is wrong with you?!?

Supporting Trump's cabinet pick is considered trolling? I think not. I think school choice will be a good thing for students.
I watched the video of her getting questioned, how can the republicans make an excuse for someone so blatantly underqualified?
The senators should be forced to document their reasoning when approving candidates like a court decision.
So, pantz, what benefit does DeVos have?
Wait what is she gonna do to disabiled students?
Might be wrong but there were talks about her disbanding IDEA.
This is a good day for America. Sessions will be another step up.
This is bait. Don't fall for it.

She paid them $200 million.

As I said in the other thread, school choice is useless if we can't address the consistently declining quality of public education nationwide - something DeVos clearly is not capable of accomplishing.
Wait what is she gonna do to disabiled students?
The private schools she advocates for are mostly for profit and disabled students cost more money due to staff help and accessibility requirements. They will be left behind in her system.
I hope both the American people and the Democrats make her job a living hell. She is wholly unqualified for the job, and is yet another reflection of the batshit insane administration that Trump is installing.
You guys better say source your counter-claims to DeVos before/so the typical supporters run away from this thread again.

I bet you $200 million you're never going to get that on paper as the reason she got picked though. Gotta love politics in a capitalistic society.

You're going to trust someone who's never touched a public school with running public schools. She knows nothing about choice or education.

Oh of course not.
Expecting the Cspan footage to go on porn hub for the way this administration is fucking the country

I'm sure she will have plenty of qualified educators around herself to advise. It's her policies that count in my opinion.
Say bye bye to the United States education system.

Her policies are garbage.
So wait does that mean that schools will be able to choose not to accomodate special children? That essentially in some states there will be a complete split between special and mainstream schools?

Yup!
It's fucking atrocious!
