But Queen’s manager Jim Beach announced an “important breakthrough” in the seven-year “saga” of getting the biopic made. He said Baron Cohen had returned and will write and direct as well as star.

He had his doubters, and even quit the project back in 2013, but Sacha Baron Cohen is back on the Queen biopic and is well and truly at the helm. Finally the biopic about the biggest band in British history can get off the ground. After a heck of a lot of too-ing and fro-ing Sacha Baron Cohen has agreed to take on the project, despite previously being replaced because it was thought he wasn’t right for the role. The film project has struggled to get off the ground since, so he was approached to return. The band’s manager Jim Beach revealed at the Artist and Management awards that he had been re-recruited and would be writing, producing, directing and starring in the movie, The Sun reports. ‘He was always the first choice but he dropped out in 2013 following “creative differences”,’ Beach said. He explains that it was originally thought that Sacha as the star would ‘distract’ from the message behind the movie being more of a funny man. Drummer Roger Taylor previously said and that they ‘didn’t want it to be a joke’. But now the Borat and Bruno star is on board and the project, which they’ve allegedly been working on for the last seven years, can finally get under way.
[Source: Mirror, Metro, MusicWeek]
Cohen looks remarkably like freddie and he can act. Im excited
Sacha Baron Cohen has great chest hair.
Fuck yeah, only person I would ever think can pull it off.
Cohen looks remarkably like freddie and he can act. Im excited
What's more important here, he can sing really well:
I think he just really wishes he was Freddie
I think he just really wishes he was Freddie
I can think of worse people.
Even if it's perfectly written, presented and acted, I'll still be constantly thinking "Freddie is Borat" as I watch it.
I think he just really wishes he was Freddie
I don't blame him.
Even if it's perfectly written, presented and acted, I'll still be constantly thinking "Freddie is Borat" as I watch it.
i don't really think so. sacha is probably most well known for borat, but he's got a pretty great talent to act different characters. while each tends to have a comedic edge to it, they're all quite distinct. when i see sweeney todd, i don't think borat. when i see les miserables, i don't think borat. i only really think of borat when i see things he's in that are comedically similar in tone to borat - that is, ali g, hugo, and the dictator. i doubt highly that sacha's going to try to make this all a joke. i think that this is his potential break into a serious career that will prevent him from being completely pigeon holed into a typecast role. i'm excited to see how he performs. [editline]28th March 2015[/editline]
I think he just really wishes he was Freddie
but then again who doesn't
I think Cohen has enough respect to not want this to be a funny movie. Really hope this does Freddie justice he was a wonderful person.
He explains that it was originally thought that Sacha as the star would ‘distract’ from the message behind the movie being more of a funny man. Drummer Roger Taylor previously said and that they ‘didn’t want it to be a joke’.
Well, Freddie Mercury incidentally already had a sense of humor. For example, for live shows he wanted a giant cock and balls to zipline over the audience into a pair of lips with a mustache on stage. You don't even have to write that.
I only found out that Cohen played Ali G about 5 years after I discovered he existed in the first place. He's astonishingly good at looking like a different person if you're not looking out for him.
Even if it's perfectly written, presented and acted, I'll still be constantly thinking "Freddie is Borat" as I watch it.
Tbh i didn't know he was Borat until i saw it written. I'll probably think "Wow, this guy looks too much like Freddie.". Can't wait.
sacha is actually a potentially great actor.
sacha is actually a potentially great actor.
I've never seen him in a serious roll but that doesn't change my expectations, I feel like he could do great with this
Turns out it was just a joke. http://spin.com/articles/sacha-baron-cohen-queen-biopic-freddie-mercury-manager/
Turns out it was just a joke. http://spin.com/articles/sacha-baron-cohen-queen-biopic-freddie-mercury-manager/
I thought this was the case. I guarantee Sacha wanted to do the warts and all version of the story, where as Brian May wants to whitewash everything and have a tribute circlejerk to the band. He's got a vice like grip on the property and no, its not a good thing.
Fuck you Brian May
Fuck you Brian May
brian may didnt tell the joke
So who IS playing the role?
So who IS playing the role?
If previous news were true, then Ben Whishaw. Yeah.
The band being involved is pure lunacy. Everything will be whitewashed to hell and May and Rogers will come out of it smelling of roses. They want to put across a very specific idea of Mercury that will help them sell more Greatest Hits and gig tickets. A massive conflict of interest.
Although I do like Brian May and Roger Taylor, I think their position with the biopic (like with any biopic about a living person) should be purely a 'make sure you're not being slandered' role.

Get Noel Fielding, he kinda looks like 70's Freddie.
