Roman Catholic Cardinals started a conclave on Tuesday to elect a successor to Pope Benedict, who abdicated last month. Doesn't it sometimes take years?
Doesn't it sometimes take years?
It takes a couple weeks. I doubt there's ever been a time they've elected a pope on the first vote. It's usually the fifth or sixth.
Choose the black guy!
Choose the black guy!
I seriously hope they never elect an American. NPR was talking about the vote on Friday. They kept discussing, "How can an American Pope bring democracy to the world?" Made me want to puke.
Choose the black guy!
Maybe they have, that's why there's black smoke.
Why is there a cigar sticked into a building roof?
Doesn't it sometimes take years?
The longest ever was like 3 years or something.
I really hope the Australian Cardinal doesn't get it Pell is a fucking awful person
So, no New Pope yet then. They should probably go for Cherry Pope or Roman Pope; Diet Pope or Pope Zero would spell disaster for the Church. But regardless of which Pope is chosen, they can't go back to Pope Classic. This terrible joke brought to you by the Popesi Corporation. Popesi Max; great taste, zero altar boys. (more like zero taste, am I right?)
I nominate myself for pope. I'm not Catholic, but I would still do better than the last guy. [sub][sub]plus I would get my own castle and people would worship me and the ground I walk on I think so at least that's how being pope works, right[/sub][/sub]
No surprise there, it usually takes weeks to decide, I really hope it doesn't end up being headline news every day they don't make their decision.
oh god its the Lost smoke monster, it was the pope the whole time
Doesn't it sometimes take years?
very rarely it does.
oh god its the Lost smoke monster, it was the pope the whole time
The Pope was a time-travelling island all along?! Also, in regards to Last or First, I for one welcome the new head of the Vatican; Slowpope.

Means my candidacy is still on. Still think I could make a good compromise candidate.
Ok, one last Pope joke for tonight; Hank Hill would probably make a fun cardinal. He could promote popeane and popeane accessories.
I've read about it, and apparently, it's 2/3 majority for a new pope, but Pope John Paul II added a rule stating that if it lasts more than two weeks, it changes to a simple majority.
What is this "jignogism" you speak of? It sounds tasty.
Essentially extreme patriotism + imperialism. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jingoism
We should set up a Popecast thread for the following week.
I thought the Pope was chosen by God? These guys think they're God?
I thought the Pope was chosen by God? These guys think they're God?
Well, yes and no. Think of it this way - if the role of Pope was elected by God himself, the votes from the cardinals would be unanimous. But since all Cardinals (and Catholics, for that matter) are servants of God to some degree, then they, ostensibly, choose the new Pope in light of God's "interests."
Choose the black guy!
he's been thrown in the fire.
Eh, I've gotten really, really indifferent about the whole thing. The Catholic church is falling into irrelevancy and shedding followers like it's going out of style. They've been so thoroughly discredited by the constant ongoing abuse scandals that nobody in developed countries really gives a shit what the church has to say anymore. They're digging in harder and harder on outdated social stances and opposition to things that have become accepted facts of life to the rest of us. It seems quaint and silly to the rest of us that they're still campaigning against condoms, premarital sex and gay people.
It'd be a shame if that building blew up with the dudes inside.
