In the eyes of at least one intellectual property academic, the passing of controversial anti-piracy website-blocking legislation in the senate on Monday night represented "a very dark day for the internet in Australia". But for the film and TV industry, which has been battling online piracy at record levels, it was a watershed moment. Finally they could seek a remedy in the courts to block access to sites offering their content for free. The Copyright Amendment (Online Infringement) Bill 2015, introduced into parliament by Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull in March to curb online piracy of film and TV shows, passed with the Coalition and Labor's support 37-13. The legislation allows rights holders to go to a Federal Court judge to get overseas websites, or "online locations", blocked that have the "primary purpose" of facilitating copyright infringement. If a rights holder is successful in their blocking request, Australian internet providers, such as Telstra and Optus, will need to comply with a judge's order by disabling access to the infringing location. Sites such as The Pirate Bay and KickAssTorrents, which allow people to illicitly download movies and TV shows online without paying, are expected to be among the first websites in rights holders' sights.
Source: http://www.smh.com.au/digital-life/digital-life-news/australian-senate-passes-controversial-antipiracy-websiteblocking-laws-20150622-ghuorh.html
This will be so easy to work around.
Good to know that VPN services will be get a lot more customers.
"a very dark day for the internet in Australia".
Every day is a dark day for the internet in Australia
I generally dislike anti piracy laws
Tbh If your product aren't overprice, delay content and complicate to purchace. I would better buy it
Didn't work for the UK(blocking TPB), it's not gonna work for Australia.
Tbh If your product aren't overprice, delay content and complicate to purchace. I would better buy it
True but this is Australia, the land of shit Internet connection and expensive shit.
I'm not surprised this has bilateral support, Conroy tried to get bills akin to this passed when labor was in. Disgusting that both the LNP and Labor support this. If everything wasn't so over expensive here people might actually buy it.

Fuck this country, Labor and Liberal Party are a disgrace to Australia, it seems only the Greens and minor parties actually give a shit about our rights slowly being taken away.
Good to know that VPN services will be get a lot more customers.
They have intentions to block VPNs on copyright grounds, but it would be economic suicide since A LOT of businesses uses VPNs.

Not just that, Australia has the inherent problem that it's fucking far away from everything else, meaning that even with a fast connection, you're still gonna get massive ping when connecting to European or American servers which is where most Internet shit is hosted.
Faster than 98% of AU... [editline]23rd June 2015[/editline] Even government departments use VPN.
NBN is in a lot of places nowadays. [editline]23rd June 2015[/editline] I don't live at a uni, just a normal house that had NBN available.
Are you referring to our speeds because:
I'm just trying to show that things are getting better, Tony hasn't helped but we will be up to other countries eventually.
To be honest this is going to change nothing if you simply don't pirate stuff. Why would you need to? People always go for the obligatory 'hurr things are expensive', yet Spotify is free, Foxtel has cut their prices literally by half in recent years, and there are other video services like Netflix, Stan and Presto that are like only $10 per month or otherwise only 30 minutes of work each month if you do an entry-level job. People who complain about '$100 games' obviously don't shop around outside of EB Games and major online marketplaces; even huge retailers like Big W sell brand new games for like $78. If you can't afford something like $10 per month for Netflix, you probably have bigger financial concerns that you should take care of first.

This will let companies take down small websites for saying anything bad about their games or movies, on bullshit grounds.

oh yeah, that too - streaming services barely work in a large majority of places in australia so saying 'there's always streaming services' is just plain ignorant

I don't want to wait a couple of months to see the next episode of a show has aired everywhere else already.
Also the huge markups we face on imports, etc etc.
Speaking of streaming services, how is Netflix right now? Is the selection good? And are the episodes up on Netflix around the same time as everywhere else or does it have a delay like TV, Movie and some games?
Are you referring to our speeds because:
Tell me how much did you spend for that.

Pretty sure you can VPN it or something but in the eyes of the law that's as illegal as just pirating your favourite show anyway which is retarded.
Tell me how much did you spend for that.
He must live in one of the few areas where the NBN was installed before Tony and his goons stopped it.
Tell me how much did you spend for that.
NBN is pretty much the same price as normal Broadband.
I'm gonna guess it's $100+
just get a good job you lazy suckholes!!
Well shit, think about what you just said. If you don't have a job or any income for that matter, it doesn't give you a free pass to just pirate anything you want to; to use an artist's property without reimbursing them for it.
