Battlefield 3 Will require Origin, Including Retail copies
There has been some confusion over how EA’s new Origin service will be integrated into Battlefield 3. Battlelog plays a big part, with the ability to browse servers and join a game directly from the browser. But according to DICE’s Daniel Martos, Origin will be required in order to play Battlefield 3 if the game is bought in retail. We don’t know whether this is true if the game is downloaded through a digital download service other than Origin, but we suspect Origin will be required no matter what.
This isn’t a big surprise, as many games these days require a client to run in the background, most notably games from Valve, where Steam is required. However, it can become an issue if the client is draining CPU power, which was the case with Origin during the Battlefield 3 alpha trial. Of course, it was only an alpha, so many tweaks and fixes are bound to happen. Another issue is memory usage among these clients, both Steam and Origin appear to use somewhere around 50 MB of memory during a game (but that can depend on the game and other system specs).
Last week, EA confirmed that Battlefield 3 would not be released on Steam due to certain Steam rules where DLC and patches must be provided via Steam.

Welp.
There goes a sale.
incoming valve fanboy shitstorm
[sp]steam does the same thing[/sp]
omg origin so gay steam ftw
[sp]Seriously though I wouldn't be so against origin if it wasn't just EA Games and was actually offering something unique[/sp]
This should've been expected. Still, considering my past experiences with EADM, I'd prefer to have a disk copy in addition to Origin, so still looking at a retail purchase.
Whatever, still going to get it. I dont want that shit but whatever.
Yes it does so what, I don't complain at Origin but what's the point in having multiple game stores in your computer, specially if you're only going to play one single game
Everyone will still buy their shit on steam. Its pointless.
enjoy your steam monopoly, when they become the sole digital distro, they could price anything at any price they want and get away with it
Part of the reason Steam is so popular is their remarkable deals and customer service, do you really think they would screw that up just to make a quick buck?
I honestly couldn't care less. As long as it doesn't use that shitty battlelog crap.
It really doesn't matter, origin is tiny, it's improved since EADM and you don't even need it t be active for you to play the game. Anyone that doesn't buy it because of that is an idiot, and is just missing out because of their ignorance.
I honestly couldn't care less. As long as it doesn't use that shitty battlelog crap.
You know it will though, not much point in saying "as long as it doesn't" or do you mean having to choose a server from the battle log site? Cause I would agree there, although I think that was just the alpha.

Possibly, but not while Gabe is around. We only need to worry when he needs a successor.

Yes.
If there is nowhere else to buy games, then what do they care if you're satisfied.
How about no

Really if they wanted to make a quick buck they would just do a random holiday sale.
The fact that they have daily deals and mid week sales is just awesome.
As far as Origin, I'm just getting a boxed copy so I don't have to worry about not being able to download it again or something. I had that problem with "EA download manager" and battlefield 2.
yes
think of the money you could make when you're the only person in the world who can sell games digitally
$70 usd games, more dlcs, more shitty content
hatz
If valve was greedy, why is it that they made it so portal 2 was 30 dollars about a month or so after launch?
Valve is greedy, making one of their most popular games free, can't get more greedy than that

There's still going to plenty of other ways to buy games, no one is (or at least I'm not) suggesting to let Steam get a monopoly (which by the way are illegal under US law).
the app store is a monopoly only on it's own platform, so it works because the developers of the platform control the economy
steam doesn't manufacture all computers ever
and no, steam isn't the sole digital distro, capsule, gog, direct2drive, eadm, and a bunch of other ones have good sales despite what you may believe
valve wouldn't change prices themselves, but to say that publishers wouldn't overcharge is a retarded statement
If they started changing the price on steam, then just get a code from another source for cheaper and register it on steam. It's not valves fault that companies like to keep games at 60 dollars for several years and charge 15 dollars for dlc.
Doesn't matter to me, origin is installed on my PC with autostartup disabled. I don't use it much, but it uses little space so whatever. Its not a hassle or anything so BF3 still gets my purchase.
Not buying this now. I don't want my games going away after two years, or only being able to install it a few times.
I feel like I'm the only one who's not bothered by battlelog or origin. The alpha worked tip top, I'm expecting this to work like a charm too.
Origin isn't that bad. I activated a few older retail games on it in case I ever lose the discs, I can just redownload it off Origin. It has some not-too-bad sales, and the bullshit about your account being deleted after 2 years is only if you don't have anything on that account at all. Steam has nearly an identical agreement.
I'm not saying it's great, but whoever is not buying it just because of Origin is so ignorant that it's ridiculous.
It's kinda funny that people defended Origin by saying it wont be needed to play and you will be able to delete it afterwards, nope.
enjoy your steam monopoly, when they become the sole digital distro, they could price anything at any price they want and get away with it
No.

No.
Even if they do reach a point where they're the only distribution platform, as long as the government isn't shoving steam down your throat for some reason if they jack up prices competitors will underbid them as fast as they possibly could.
Hell, steam is actually good and there's still plenty of competition.
Wow something I have to download big deal.
Everyone bitched the same way about steam when it first came out. The quicker you accept it the quicker you can enjoy your game.
he didn't actually say it would be required to run while playing the game
so
i'll just wait on an official announcement
BF3 wont be a steam. I hope I'm not late on this.
God damn it, I didnt read the end of the article.
Here's what you do. Sign up for Origin, use a fake e-mail, turn off start with Windows (if you'd like), only play Battlefield 3 on it and just ignore going to the store. You can even just make it a desktop icon so you barely ever have to see Origin.
If you have Grand Theft Auto IV on PC, it will be just like launching it through the Social Club.
Valve is greedy, making one of their most popular games free, can't get more greedy than that
lol you can't deny that they made that decision since TF2 sales were probably waning and the mannco store would be open to a lot more people who otherwise wouldn't have spent money on TF2 at all
Hmph, I don't think I will have enough money for a graphics card AND this.
You can just add the game's .exe and put the game on your gamelist, so that you can enable the Steam overlay while playing any game. Friends, browser, ETC
