I'm going to buy a prebuilt (Yes I know I'm getting ripped to the extreme, but I don't really care, and my uncle works for them, so I feel like I'm helping them. I'm wondering if this card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131327 will work with this pc http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/computer_can_series.do?storeName=computer_store&category=desktops&a1=Category&v1=Everyday+computing&series_name=p6550z_series&jumpid=in_R329_prodexp/hhoslp/psg/desktops/Everyday_computing/p6550z_series I made the CPU on that an Athlon x4 though, and another one of their models http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/computer_can_series.do?storeName=computer_store&category=desktops&a1=Category&v1=High+performance&series_name=HPE300z_series&jumpid=in_R329_prodexp/hhoslp/psg/desktops/High_performance/HPE300z_series has the same power supply and can handle a 1gb radeon 5770 too, but I am calling hp tommorow to ask them a few questions before I buy it. But do you guys think it will work or are they running a low profile one, because the newegg link up to doesn't give a specific psu wattage requirment.
HP's website doesn't tell me shit about what the computer's actually capable of. I've gotten screwed over SOO many times with prebuilts that I haven't bought a desktop like that in years (for example, an eMachines desktop I bought had a spot for a PCI-e slot, but the slot wasn't there. :wtc:). Your best bet is to call then and ask them specifically if a card with a PCI-e 2.1 x16 bus will be compatible with the Pavilion p6550z series computers. Also ask around the internet about that card's power requirements and ask HP what the wattage on the PSU is and see if there's enough. (This hassle is one of the main reasons you shouldn't buy prebuilt computers.)
Site shows:
Choices: Integrated graphics - ATI Radeon HD 4200 [VGA] 512MB ATI Radeon HD 5450 [DVI, HDMI, VGA adapter] 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 315 [DVI, HDMI, VGA adapter] 1GB ATI Radeon HD 5450 [DVI, HDMI, VGA adapter] 1GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 220 [DVI, HDMI, VGA] 1GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 320 [DVI, HDMI, VGA] 1.5GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 230 [DVI, HDMI, VGA]
Given that any but the Integrated will no doubt be seated in a PCI-E slot on the motherboard, you could probably take it out and replace with your own. Not sure if the slot exists on the Integrated option. My friend bought a HP desktop that looked like that (Not sure on model) and it didn't have a PCI-E slot at all on the mobo.
I doubt they will help you because HP voids your warranty when you open the case and replace hardware. I have no clue if it will work though. Just keep in mind that the PSU in the HP needs a 16x PCI 6-pin power cable, the wattage of that cpu needs to be sufficient and you need the slot to be there.
