Why valve hasn't leaked anything since early june regarding HL3
32 replies, posted
I know that valve had the cs:go lawsuits, VR advancements, and office moving on their hands, but how come valve hasn't accidentally/purposely leaked info on hl3? It's september right now and they still haven't leaked a single thing regarding hl3... I may have a theory to why they haven't leaked since they emerged from being busy... Either HL3's development is over and they'll ship it 2017-2018 or they are finished and waiting for the next big thing in technology... Anyone else have theories to why they haven't leaked anything? I think it's too suspicious for valve to not leak anything since summer started...

Can someone share their opinion so I can hear other's point of view on this topic?
Because Half-Life 3 doesn't exist, and never will, get over it.

How old are you?
Even nastier on Inacio's profile, too. :v:

All this over being rated dumb on one post.
The more important question is why are you still expecting to hear anything about Episode 3, let alone HL3?
It's been almost 9 years since Episode 2's cliffhanger, and the rare leak is all we have to go off of.

Fuck me it's been THAT long? Wow.
I'm a huge HL fan, but I've lost a lot of interest. If HL3 was revealed tomorrow, I'd have maybe a passing interest in it until release. I don't think Valve is going to touch the property again for a long time. I'm sure they'll eventually show something, but as it is now they have a lot of irons in the fire with TF2, VR, hardware, Steam etc. HL3/HL2: Episode 3 is low on the list.
I feel like some people get so caught up in the legend of hl3 that they just say they are excited despite being young kids and never actually having finished episode 2.
talking, about Steam/Valve eh there still Trying ( or better yet not ) fixing a bug that could fuck you're account if you plau on 3rd party servers so um yea good luck with making a real game

because companies that have projects they want secret generally don't do that lmfao
Here's a question for you: why would Valve accidentally/purposely leak info?
Valve is making lodsemone off microtransactions, why should they be arsed to waste money on a singleplayer game without microtransactions. Key members of the team also left now so even if they tried it probably would not be that good. I think it is about time to move on, there are plenty of other great games out there.
[editline]21st September 2016[/editline]
Also, Valve as a company """leaking""" information themselves.
How does that even work.

do you unironically believe that their biggest franchise ever, which happens to have been one of the biggest games of its decade, wouldn't make enough money for them to consider it worth it?
how the hell would "the game of the decade" that be a waste of money

Was one of the biggest games of its decade.
I will ask you a question then: Do you still have hope for HL3?
[editline]21st September 2016[/editline]
Okay yes fine, there is stuff like Doom which actually turned out rather popular now, but still at this rate I highly doubt Valve would be arsed to do anything.
Was one of the biggest games of its decade. And we are in a different decade now.
but that makes all of its success magically vanish because why?

I stay 100% stone cold neutral about everything until I see official news about it, but no, I don't do this because of half life 3.

Just because something is profitable, doesn't make it ideal. Would you rather get a 40% return on a stock, or a 15% return. Either way you still make money, yet one is clearly a better choice, all other factors being equal.
Hatshops are more money for a given quantity of effort.
source 2 gives me hope in regards to the possibility of it's release. i mean, half life seems the most ideal way to show off and test the capabilities of the engine, as well as the fact that it'd be an absolute waste to only use stuff like the lab to do that sorta shit. every other series they have seems far too limiting.

in short term standards, that's likely. in longer terms, half life, and more specifically, it's modding capabilities, can potentially become huge moneymakers for valve. like, think about it; those hatshops wouldn't even exist if it weren't for half life. then there's stuff like garry's mod and black mesa, which i'm not sure if valve makes any money off of, but i'm assuming so, though i could very well be wrong. and even if HL3 doesn't generate any new series or whatever for valve, you still have mods that'll come out years after the release that cause sales spikes, like cry of fear or the stanley parable. and i mean, sure, hats will still probably sell more, but valve won't be taking any risks if they make the game. but that's a pretty big if, so i wouldn't take any sides until the game's either given an official release date, or cancelled.
next year we will hear more of HL3. Early January.

Probably because you can only make so much money with a single player experience compared to the raw amount of dough you can generate from a successful multiplayer game.
Single Player games can only have so much DLC content to support it post release - in the case of Half Life, I'm fairly certain that any DLC content at all would be a PR nightmare, so you're stuck with a game that would make a lot of money instantly and then make nothing past that point despite having taken like five to ten years to make (judging by Valve's incredibly sluggish development cycles).
On the other hand, you have a game like DOTA 2 which is strong of nearly one million player every day, and I can guarantee you that these players are spending way more than the cost of a AAA title on micro-transactions, cosmetics and compendiums.
Half-Life isn't "their biggest franchise ever" anymore. Dota 2 has taken that title practically the instant they announced it, and it still reigns king it terms of raw playerbase, right in front of CS:GO.
If they wanted to make supersonic dollars, they'd make a VR bundle with HL3 included.
.. but we've seen tons of times already where this could've been a thing.
source 3 hasn't been completely released yet that's why. When source 3 is actually released, then maybe they'll get to work on HL3 as something to sell the engine but until then its just a pipedream

Or you can release a new engine, but with hats, and still have all the community mods, and the hatshop profits.
half life more like no life
"Its been a long time since valve leaked anything about half life 3"
Do you even know what a leak is?

It's been long suspected that Apple often "leaks" things it wants to build buzz for before officially announcing/demoing things, but to suggest that's what Valve is doing when HL3 info leaks out is having optimistically high hopes at best, because that would imply that Valve is doing stealth marketing for an impending release, and that's preeeeetty unlikely.

It would be rather unintuitive since a VR Half Life would have to be drastically different from the rest of the series.
Also it would divide the fanbase a lot because some people aren't into VR, and a lot aren't into investing hundreds into VR equipment and more hundreds into upgrades just to experience the long awaited sequel.

Thanks for bringing it to my attention that companies intentionally leak shit. Still don't think Valve does it, since they so oftenly remove leaked stuff from the internet.

And back in the day, I thought "Wow we've been waiting for Half Life 2 for so long".
Just so you know, it's been longer since the release of Episode 2 than the time between Half Life 1 and Episode 2.
At the moment I don't care about it anymore.
But.
As soon as they officially announce it with screenshots and trailers I will get hyped to the moon and beyond.
But until then I'll do other things.
