Johnny Test was created and executive produced by Scott Fellows, the creator of the Nickelodeon live-action series Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide, and a writer on The Fairly OddParents. The show premiered on September 17, 2005 on Kids' WB's Saturday morning lineup, alongside Loonatics Unleashed and Coconut Fred's Fruit Salad Island. The series was developed from a straight-forward test pilot, produced in-house by Warner Bros. Animation, which was animated roughly in Adobe Flash, with the same plot, similar color schemes as the episode "Johnny to the Center of the Earth" with an American voice cast instead. Fellows, creator of the series, said he convinced the idea basing the titular character on himself when he was a young boy, with his sisters, Susan and Mary, being based on his own two sisters, also named Susan and Mary. Due to the profitability of Dexter's Laboratory a decade ago the series is responsible for recycling a lot of ideas from the older cartoon. According to his official website, James Arnold Taylor said that he was not Fellows' original choice to play the Johnny Test character. He had previously voiced the lead character in the original test pilot and was initially going to replaced by a different voice actor, with a Canadian voice cast instead, just only after the show was given the greenlight by The WB. But of course, the studio had trouble finding Johnny's initial voice convincing for the first six episodes, so they gave Taylor back the role to redub his dialog for the rest of the first season, and managed to keep him on the cast for the rest of the series, but none of the original crew from the initial test pilot, and its producer Aaron Simpson, remained on the show. The remainder of the first season was produced in-house at Warner Bros. Animation (with Canadian animation studios Studio B Productions and Top Draw Animation outsourcing some of the show's service work), and some of the episodes were being storyboarded by Atomic Cartoons, and most of the voice recording taking place, in Canada. However, the merger of UPN and The WB into The CW resulted in many budget cuts for the show, and resulted in hiatus. Cookie Jar Entertainment, based in Canada, decided to take control of the series' production. Due to this change, the writers, storyboarders, and art crew who worked on the first season were let go, resulting in an entirely new crew managing the show. In addition, the budget of the show dropped dramatically, leading seasons two and three of the show being animated in Adobe Flash by Collideascope Digital Productions. The show's opening theme was later changed, with the opening being made of recycled episode footage. It is now regarded as part of Teletoon's original series catalogue. Production was suspended on March 1, 2008. However, James Arnold Taylor, the voice of Johnny Test had announced that it was renewed for a fourth season[1]. This new season was currently being animated in the Philippines. It finally premiered in high-definition on Teletoon on September 10, 2009 and on Cartoon Network in the U.S. on November 9, 2009.

Characters (From Left to Right):

Johnathan "Johnny" Test (voiced by James Arnold Taylor): A troublesome, narcissistic and widely disrespected 11-year old boy who is the son of Hugh and Lila, brother of Susan and Mary and main protagonist of the show. He is frequently called the "kid with the flaming hair" due to having red highlights in his blond hair. As well as this, he is most often seen wearing baggy green cargo pants and a black shirt with a trefoil symbol on it, which he wears under a blue jacket, and a watch that he rarely uses. Because he has Susan and Mary by his side, he can live any kid's dream, only to find that some dreams aren't worth living. He is very hyperactive, and often messes with his sisters' inventions, causing trouble and mayhem, but just as often proves himself to be extremely clever such as by frequently tricking his genius sisters or saving the day from whatever danger happens to show up. Johnny can be considered very spoiled and stubborn, as he gets what he wants, through deceit, blackmail, or manipulation, though he does love his sisters in a way only a brother can. Johnny has an alter ego that he calls "Johnny X", who is a superhero that has various superpowers, including hurricane hands (speeding wind from his hands), shapeshifting, fire-powered transformation, teleportation, ESP, and "Power Poots". He was in love with Janet and later Sissy, the latter born out of hostile rivalry. Johnny hates school and doesn't work hard at all; if anything, he goes to great lengths to avoid doing work, often using his sisters' inventions to do so and often putting himself and/or others in danger as a result. He is addicted to video games, and will do anything to get them. His catchphrase is "Whoa, didn't see that coming" during an unexpected event. There have been minor alterations to that phrase and in some cases, others have said it, including Dukey.

Dukey (voiced by Louis Chirillo): Johnny's anthropomorphic talking pet dog. The cause of Dukey's anthropomorphism is because of one of Susan and Mary's inventions, thus giving him humanlike abilities. Dukey, when Mr. and Mrs. Test aren't around, will stand on his hind legs rather than all fours, like he does when anyone but Johnny's parents are around. There have been a few "close calls" around the series, such as when Mr. Test got trapped inside of one of Johnny's video games and Johnny and Dukey also went inside the game to rescue him, and Dukey accidentally spoke in front of him, causing Mr. Test to ask, "Did Dukey just talk?" Every time one of his parents asks this question after Dukey just spoke in front of them, either Johnny, Susan, or Mary answers "no" and their parents immediately believe them. Sometimes Dukey dresses as a human being when going out in public, and he is addressed by others as Johnny's "hairy friend," because the minor characters' lack of intellect causes them to believe that Dukey is a human. Dukey can easily be bribed into assisting Johnny in his manipulations with steak.

The Test Twins - Johnny's 13-year old genius identical twin sisters, who frequently use him as a lab rat for various inventions, most of which to impress their neighbor, Gil. Though they generally refuse to help Johnny in his antics, they generally end up doing so anyway due to Johnny blackmailing or manipulating them, or in exchange for Johnny allowing them to use him as a guinea pig. Their hard-headed demeanor makes them gullible, and they have been tricked by Johnny on various occasions. Both twins wear traditional lab coats, and harbors a deep love and obsession for the Test's next door neighbor, Gil, although their attempts to attract his attention always end in failure. Both girls attend school at the Porkbelly (formally Mega) Institution of Technology. Their names Maybe a parrody of Mary-Sue.

Susan Test (voiced by Maryke Hendrikse): She has blue eyes and wears a black skirt, knee-high socks and a pair of mary janes, and a blue shirt depicting a star. She has straight red hair, held with a star-shaped clip, and wears square eyeglasses. She tends to be more jaded and cynical than Mary, which often leads to her downfall. Susan's emotions are more extreme than her twin's, and she tends to be more impulsive. Eugene/Bling-Bling expresses fond interest in Susan, often causing her to be used as a "bargaining chip" in his negotiations. In the episode "Johnny X Strikes Back", she was given a vapor wave ability.
Mary Test (voiced by Brittney Wilson in Season 1, Ashleigh Ball in Season 2 onward): She has green eyes and often wears baggy blue jeans and sneakers with her trademark yellow moon-shirt. She has curly red hair, held with a crescent moon clip, and wears similarly shaped glasses. Mary has been shown to be more compassionate than Susan. Mary is prone to believing in less in science and more in the realm of science fiction, which proves to be correct, despite the scorn received from her twin. Mary seems to be more level-headed and conservative than Susan, and speaks her mind much less often. In the episode "Johnny X Strikes Back", she was given telekinetic abilities.
