My video card conked out recently, and I don't really know where to go from here. I've had an HD6770 for several years now, and I want to step my shit up.
I was looking at a 6850 because I found a pretty good deal on one, but I really don't know. My thinking is that if I got by on a ~3 year outdated card, I can easily save myself some money and get another somewhat outdated card (by perhaps a year or so).
My buddy linked me to this, but I don't know if he's as illiterate as I am and is just pretending to know his shit: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2GB-Asus-Radeon-R7-260X-DirectCU-II-OC-28nm-7000MHz-GDDR5-GPU-1188MHz-896-St-/121297903340?pt=UK_Computing_Computer_Components_Graphics_Video_TV_Cards_TW&hash=item1c3deb1eec
My ideal budget would be around £80, but if my arm was sufficiently twisted, I can go higher. I do not mind going second hand.
Any ideas? I'm not biased towards any one company.
260x is the best you can get for this budget.
260x ain't bad. Best for your price range.
The 750Ti is better and costs about the same as that ASUS 260X: http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/371017644282?nav=SEARCH
Yo can find a 260X for cheaper than that, however
That's wrong, the 260x is better

That's the theorethical numbers, not the actual game performance. The entire point of maxwell is being significantly more efficient with less resources, something it's actually quite capable of
http://techreport.com/review/26050/nvidia-geforce-gtx-750-ti-maxwell-graphics-processor
It's actually a bit of an unfair comparison, because it's supposed to be the competitor to the 265/7850 rebadge, but the prices are so skewed in Europe for budget parts it becomes better for the same price.
Generally, it's like this: 7870 > 7850/R7 265 > 750Ti >> R7 260X > 750
OP should get whatever his budget can be stretched to - the difference between the 260X/750 and the 750Ti/7850 is worth it if it can be stretched to.
Does this seem like a good deal? Do refurbishes cards have a bad rep or anything?

That's actually a really nice deal, thing is, for a bit more you can buy a brand new one, unfortunately that's out of your budget. The facts have already been shown on which is better but if I had your budget, I would buy the card you just linked. Gigabyte makes a nice product and I don't see what would be wrong with factory refurb, I've had refurbished items before and they're generally aren't problems.
There are only two things really different about refurbs. One good, one bad. Bad- warranties are usually shorter Good- it's basically been factory certified a working product.
So I ended up settling on a GTX 750ti for ~£115. For this price, are there any better alternatives, or am I pretty safe with this?

That price is from Amazon, for what it's worth
Why not spend a bit more and get a 660 or 270?'
E: oh didn't see your original budget
I gotta say, for a relatively small amount more, the improvements are pretty significant. I've cancelled my order now, looking into both those cards.

The 270 is looking pretty sweet. Anything I should know before I order?
Just look up some benchmarks for each and find out how they compare in terms of temperatures and performance.
The 270 is looking pretty beastly in comparison: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1039?vs=1043

Okay, order placed. Thanks for the help guys!

That is comparing the 270x with the 660, not the 270. Here http://www.legitreviews.com/msi-radeon-r9-270-gaming-oc-sapphire-dual-x-r9-270-oc-video-card-review_128803/11. Looks like the 270 is better
