Comcast takes the first step in destroying Net Neutrality

BROOMFIELD, Colo., Nov 29, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Level 3 Communications, Inc. today issued the following statement, which can be attributed to Thomas Stortz, Chief Legal Officer of Level 3:
"On November 19, 2010, Comcast informed Level 3 that, for the first time, it will demand a recurring fee from Level 3 to transmit Internet online movies and other content to Comcast's customers who request such content. By taking this action, Comcast is effectively putting up a toll booth at the borders of its broadband Internet access network, enabling it to unilaterally decide how much to charge for content which competes with its own cable TV and Xfinity delivered content. This action by Comcast threatens the open Internet and is a clear abuse of the dominant control that Comcast exerts in broadband access markets as the nation's largest cable provider.
"On November 22, after being informed by Comcast that its demand for payment was 'take it or leave it,' Level 3 agreed to the terms, under protest, in order to ensure customers did not experience any disruptions.
"Level 3 operates one of several broadband backbone networks, which are part of the Internet and which independent providers of online content use to transmit movies, sports, games and other entertainment to consumers. When a Comcast customer requests such content, for example an online movie or game, Level 3 transmits the content to Comcast for delivery to consumers.
"Level 3 believes Comcast's current position violates the spirit and letter of the FCC's proposed Internet Policy principles and other regulations and statutes, as well as Comcast's previous public statements about favoring an open Internet.
"While the network neutrality debate in Washington has focused on what actions a broadband access provider might take to filter, prioritize or manage content requested by its subscribers, Comcast's decision goes well beyond this. With this action, Comcast is preventing competing content from ever being delivered to Comcast's subscribers at all, unless Comcast's unilaterally-determined toll is paid -- even though Comcast's subscribers requested the content. With this action, Comcast demonstrates the risk of a 'closed' Internet, where a retail broadband Internet access provider decides whether and how their subscribers interact with content.
"It is our hope that Comcast's senior management, for whom we have great respect, will closely consider their position on this issue and adopt an approach that will better serve Comcast and Comcast's customers.
"While Comcast's position is regrettable, Level 3 remains open and willing to work through these issues with Comcast. However, Level 3 does not seek any 'special deals' or arrangements not generally available to other Internet backbone companies.
"Given Comcast's currently stated position, we are approaching regulators and policy makers and asking them to take quick action to ensure that a fair, open and innovative Internet does not become a closed network controlled by a few institutions with dominant market power that have the means, motive and opportunity to economically discriminate between favored and disfavored content."
TL;DR
Read the first paragraph.
Seriously Comcast? What the fucking hell are you doing. I hope your fucking merger fails and then you can go die in a fucking fire.
Fuck you comcast
Wow...
inb4 firebomb them
Sometimes I don't like having Comcast, never really knowing what they're doing or what they're planning out.

I like how my internet is down 90% of the time. :3:
Fucking Comcast you suck good thing I don't have it but I feel sorry because my cousin does
I switched from Comcast a month ago. My Internet would be down half of the time I was home. It was annoying as hell.
I've had Comcast for a while. They've been great. My internet's never down because of them, it's usually our router that fucks up and even that's rare
But fuck, really!
Am I the only one who reads comcast as commie cast?
It's also great how the pretty much monopolize where I live.
And everyone said nothing was gonna happen to Net Neutrality..........boy where they wrong.
Comcast was horrid. May it burn
This is why we won't have nice things. :colbert:
Sadly, Comcast has a monopoly in the area I live in...
Glad I switched over to Astound then.
Fucking comcast.
They also charged me for a month of everything (TV, Internet, Phone (which I never even used, bought, or selected)) 2 whole months after I canceled my service :argh:
I had Comcast in Nashville, from the time Land Warrior came out to about 7 years ago... they were a bit iffy at first but then they were great... I WISH I could go back to them, even if they've got worse, they can't be as bad as my current ISP, there's just no way
DSL in Nashville, to a server in Texas, scored a 20 ping, but Bellsouth kept acting like we never paid the bill and shutting us off every day after having them for 11 months with flawless service, making us call for 30 minutes to get it back on, after a week of that we said Fuck off, went to Comcast... Ping jumped up to 40, which isn't bad considering people share a cable line, and they never went down after about 3 months
Mediacon: Goes down daily, slows to 0.40 Megs a second download, 60+% Packet Loss, from 10 AM to about 1 AM, upload never drops below 1.8Megs a sec... And that's what I'm supposed to get.. Download is supposed to be 25 Down, and costs $200/mo, and even when it's at its VERY best, the ping to a server 30 miles away never drops below 130, which is a huge disadvantage in FPS games when everyone else has a 30-60 ping... Dead before people even round the corner to me
and people will just bend over? :geno:
Man, the U.S. really is the third world of the Internet... here in France, we get what you have for 200 usd per month for 30 bucks
What Comcast fails to realize is that users shouldn't adapt to the aging network infrastructure but the other way around
A nice foreshadowing of things to come.
Fuck you comcast
You tell em' Mr Dinosaur.
A smaller company operates in my state, but I fear they may be strong-armed out by comcast if they keep expanding.
Instead of charging more, they should focus on making their service not so shit.
Instead of charging more, they should focus on making their service not so shit.
Haha, what a silly idea.
A company offering a service that isn't profit-optimized garbage. :rolleye:
Sadly, I have Comcast.
Feel bad for me please.
This actually wasn't the first step in destroying Net Neutrality.

Help!
No one likes Comcast anyway.
