If I'm playing music and I go into a game, if a sound is made in the game my music fades slightly. I've checked WMP and VLC and it happens in both.
Basically if I'm playing music in the background and I'm playing Garrysmod every time Garrysmod makes a noise my music fades out, then back in as soon as the sound is done playing. It's not just Garrysmod, it happens in every game I play and with every music player I have.

Have you tried different speakers or headphones? Sometimes those realtek drivers come with stupid effects that you can enable in the sound settings that add effects to your audio. Stuff like making your audio echo or sound like it's in a cave and other useless stuff. Check the realtek audio control panel, it's probably in your taskbar.
Overdrive? It's meant to give apps volume priority over others.
Okay so here's what I found out and it makes sense. The speakers I'm using aren't computer speakers, its a Sony STR DE197 home stereo with an 1/8th inch to dual RCA converter. The 1/8th inch jack (or 3.5mm) goes into the back of my computer, and the other end has a red and a white RCA jack. Apparently whats happening is that when my music is being played through it and more sound signals from a game are trying to be pumped through this little adapter, each signal loses its strength, hence my music fading.
Right now I have my dads old 5.1 speakers set up and there's absolutely no loss. And it sounds way more kick ass then my shitty old speaker boxes xD. I would have never thought that that's what was going wrong.

What I am guessing is that stereo's amplifier didn't have an adequate power supply (Which is a very common problem in modern designs, when will they learn?) which lead to undercurrent leading to reduced volume or distortion on high amplitude peaks in the audio.
Sort of like a very shite compressor (Such as those found in electronic music where the kick/thump pulls out the music) :v:
