Perhaps as a warning to those who dare to speak out, federal Drug Enforcement Administration agents on Tuesday raided the home of a Michigan medical marijuana patient, activist and caregiver after he organized a protest outside the Saginaw County Courthouse last week.
John F. Roberts, 49, of Thomas Township, said he believes the raid was in retaliation because he organized last week's protest accusing the Saginaw County Sheriff of raiding patients and caregivers, reports Kim Russell at NBC 25. Protesters had come from around the state, some holding signs reading, "Learn The Law."
"Our patients had to suffer because they [law enforcement] don't believe in it," said Roberts at last week's protest. "I don't give a rat's ass what they believe in."
According to Roberts, a member of Tri-County Compassion Club, he has patients who depend upon him for their marijuana supply, who will now suffer.
Saginaw County Sheriff William Federspiel claimed his department "had nothing to do" with the raid, and that it was part of a federal investigation.
According to Roberts, he was handcuffed less than 10 yards from a pile of protest signs left over after Friday's protest rally. One of the green "Learn The Law" posters lay visible atop the pile.
Behind the pile of signs were some children's toys and a large shed where Roberts and his fiancee, Stephanie Whisman, 38, also a caregiver, had been growing marijuana.
This was the second marijuana raid at Roberts' home in four months. Neither Roberts nor Whisman have been charged since agents and Saginaw County sheriff's deputies first raided their home on April 15 -- the same day the home of Saginaw Township resident and medical marijuana patient Edwin W. Boyke, 64, was also searched.
Boyke's grow equipment was destroyed, and his property and marijuana were seized in that raid. Much of it was later returned after Boyke agreed to pay $5,000 to get his own property back.
According to Roberts and Whisman, they are allowed to possess 132 plants and a little more than 1.5 pounds of "usable marijuana," based on the 10 patients for whom they care -- five each -- and Roberts' individual patient allotment.
"I may lose everything I own," Roberts said. "I'm terrified, utterly terrified."
Roberts, on the advice of his attorney, wouldn't discuss specifically what agents seized, but said they had less than what Michigan law allows. DEA agents confiscated about $10,000 worth of growing equipment, he said.
"They came in, and even the cops were there, they said the medical did not matter," Roberts said. "They will not recognize medical marijuana."
"They're like Gestapo," said Kim Zimmer, 54, of Saginaw, president of the Tri-County Compassion Club, reports Gus Burns at The Saginaw News. "They act like kids, the way they love to go in there and tear stuff up."
"Now I don't know where I'm going to get my medicine that I need," said Zimmer, who said she has had more than 30 surgeries and is one of Roberts and Whisman's patients.
"What John and Stephanie are growing, it works completely on what is bothering me," Zimmer said. "And I feel better, I don't feel pressured with having to take pain pills."
"We live in fear," Roberts said. "This is America?"
"I don't think so anymore," he said. "I don't know what this country is. I really don't."
Thomas Township police, ignoring the fact that Roberts is legal under the state's medical marijuana law, supported federal agents in the raid.
The DEA could not be reached for comment Tuesday evening.
i'm glad the DEA is taking another dangerous killer drug dealer off the street!!!
When will the shitstorm start ? My guess is Post #3
Maybe an illegal marijuana leaf was blown into the house from the outside.
Oh shit way to keep the public safe bros
That's fucking ridiculous, the DEA needs to be disbanded or they need to get their heads out of their asses.
Isn't marijuana illegal at the federal level still? if so technically a federal agent could arrest you even if your state's laws say its legal.

Agreed, they're a waste of tax-money. 27 billion dollars have been spent on the War on Drugs this year, trillions of dollars in total. Imagine what else could be done with that money. If we had spent that on NASA, we'd be mining asteroids and setting up Mars Bases by now.
Sure, they can technically do that but it still makes them assholes for trampling the state's rights, especially in this case when the unfairly banned substance is possessed for medical purposes.
Didn't Obama order them to stop doing this?
I mean, when an order comes from the president you listen.

What state right? Federal level overrules the state level. Not the other way around. I also hate to break this but the DEA might be useless but they still have a job to do. They are supposed to be going after people who use illegal drugs, whether they like it or not they have to.

President doesn't have the power to just say, stop enforcing this. He can say. Oh stop but in reality he can't do crap but ask congress to repeal it.

i believe that was just for medical marijuana dispensaries, though they've done that too iirc.
now they focus more on going after patient's homes.
I could understand if he was abusing his privilege to smoke and cultivate(to whatever the state's legal extent is) cannabis, but this guy is just trying to get people to understand the medical properties of cannabis and stop biased raids.
Way to weed out the good guys
Yay, we spend millions and possibly billions to fund the DEA. Guess what? They only capture 10% of the fucking drugs that get into this country, this is a lost cause and they should simply give up.
Good lord....just leave it to the cops to bust someone stupid enough to get caught on the road using drugs. Stop wasting taxpayer money on the DEA and put it into more useful things. Health care research, NASA, stem cell. I mean fuck man. Tons of more useful things can be done with all the money that goes to funding the DEA.
fuck the DEA
if apple ran the DEA then they would have an iDEA
:v:
...
:suicide:
This is bullshhit, DEA sucks.
They will not recognize medical marijuana
Now that is dumb. I can see why this guy organized protests and stuff. Really seems like the cops just don't realize medical marijuana is a viable option in that state now.
disband the dea , sure , but someone has to control drugs
The DEA really has nothing better to do.
"Hey instead of going and busting some meth lab lets go bust some old dude for smoking medical marijuana!"
Ah the genius minds that make up our federal government, where would we be without them?
I definitely think that medicinal marijuana should be legal, and I also think that recreational marijuana should be legal too, but until congress changes the law, the DEA are just doing the job that they have to do. Its not their fault, but the government needs to do better research (or any) on the effects of pot, and then make an un-biased decision on why it should be either legal or illegal. The only reason it is illegal now is because of lobbyists in the early 1900's and racism, and the law just hasnt changed since then. But right now its still illegal, I'm going to have to side with the DEA as it's a federal agent and federal law overrules state law
Ah, I love the smell of good old American progress!

they meant as in by law they will not make any exceptions whether the marijuana is classified as 'medical' or not.

which is absurd
Anyone else think of Half Baked while reading this?
If someone were to become the voice for legalizing Weed they should get someone who's never smoked it but has learned the facts about it. That way he's immune to any of the crap the DEA does and if they DO do anything it's illegal and punishable. I'd do it.
the misinformation produced against marijuana are mind-boggling
