• What do you guys think of the music genre Djent?

A quick explanation taken from Wikipedia "Djent is a style of heavy metal music that developed as a spinoff of traditional progressive metal. The word "djent" is an onomatopoeia for the distinctive high-gain, distorted palm-muted guitar sound employed by bands like Meshuggah. The term was initially coined by their lead guitarist, Fredrik Thordendal. Typically, the word is used to refer to music that makes use of this sound, to the sound itself, or to the scene that revolves around it." Nothing, really. Didn't know it was a genre 'till I clicked here. Name sounds dumb, music sounds okay, I guess. Not something I'd listen to, but not something that'd make me change the channel either.
Can't say I like the melody or vocals in that video so unless you can give more examples from various artists, I gotta say it sounds mediocre and annoying.
The same band is very varied in the quality of their riffs so posting one video, notably a song that's seen as a radio-hit by the fanbase, wont do them justice. On the topic tho; Djent IS becoming a genre but I wouldn't call it one just yet. The "genre" is still a very small off-shoot of Progressive Metal and are often indistinguishable, it just simply does not have enough difference at times to warrant a new genre, as every band that distinguishes itself as Djent is often just using a 7 or 8 string guitar and using simple palm-mutes. Hell, I've seen Metalcore call themselves Djent when they are simply Metalcore using 7 or 8 string guitars.
There's nothing defying about it. Just sounds like it was coined as a genre in order to make certain bands sound more "unique"
****
Thanks for doing what I should've been doing to begin with, excuse my ignorance! Anyways, here's another example of a good Djent band: Note: This is the first time this band has a singer, their bass player simply walked up to them and said "I can sing". This is the result!
There's nothing defying about it. Just sounds like it was coined as a genre in order to make certain bands sound more "unique"
Problably is just that, though you have to give some credit, it's quite hard to make a new genre.
I love Djent. Not sure why the video won't embed.
Maybe I'm just overreacting about it. I've never been a fan of spinoff or subgenres anyways, I think it corners music into "Bands that sound exactly the same".
