Korean Drama/Films - Putting South Korea on the map

Tell me, when you think of an Asian person, what do you think? What is the first Asian race that comes up to your mind? No, intellectual people, I mean the chinky eyed one likes me, the Asian Asians. So none of them turkey, india, bullshit here Mister.
A lot of people think Japanese because they made anime. A lot people think of think China because their communism, totalitarian government, and their martial arts film. Even a lot of people think of Thai because of their mauy thai and Tony Jaa. Do you know a notice a pattern here?
We fucking Koreans are never mentioned. This changes NOW.
This is the Korean Drama/Film thread.
What is Korean Drama? Obviously, it's a TV Drama series with Korean people, but above all, it has the korean-ness in it. And we're fucking good at it. To explain it better, here's wikipedia:
Korean drama (Korean: 한국드라마) refers to televised dramas, in a miniseries format, produced in the Korean language. Many of these dramas have become popular throughout Asia and have contributed to the general phenomenon of the Korean wave, known as "Hallyu", and also "Drama Fever" in some countries. Most popular Korean dramas have also become popular in other parts of the world such as Latin America, the Middle East, and elsewhere. Some of the most internationally popular Korean dramas are Winter Sonata, Dae Jang Geum, Full House, Stairway to Heaven, My Girl, My Lovely Sam Soon, Love Story in Harvard, Shining Inheritance, Autumn in My Heart, Princess Hours, 1st Shop of Coffee Prince, Yi San, Boys Over Flowers You're Beautiful and IRIS.
We even have a Korean Wave in wikipedia, we're on the fucking map baby. To explain it more:
There are two main genres of Korean dramas, generally speaking. The first genre is similar to soap operas but without the never ending plot and frank sexual content. These dramas typically involve conflicts such as single and marital relationships, money bargaining, relationships between in-laws (usually between the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law), and often complicated love triangles while the female hero usually falls in love with the main character who may treat her badly since the beginning, instead of the one who always cares for her. These dramas last anywhere from 16 episodes to over 100 (most often not exceeding 200). Most plots of korean soap operas are similar where a love triangle is always present.
The other main genre is Korean historical dramas (also known as sa geuk), which are fictionalized dramatizations of Korean history. Korean historical dramas typically involve very complex story lines with elaborate costumes, sets and special effects. Martial arts, sword fighting and horsemanship are frequently a big component of Korean historical dramas as well. K-dramas, whether the historical dramas or modern dramas, typically are characterized by excellent production quality, characters with depth, intelligent scriptwriting, etc.
As they are designed as family entertainment to satisfy a broad audience, there are typically a combination of human interest story elements across most of the historical dramas - interwoven themes of family, romance, friendship, martial arts, political strategy, wars, trade, etc. These stories are, therefore, usually of interest to all - women and men, young and old. Those westerners who do not ordinarily enjoy subtitled or foreign movies but can be persuaded to try one or a few episodes, usually find the subtitling quick and clear to read, and find themselves swept up in the stories anyway.
Some korean dramas I recommend:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stairway_to_Heaven_(TV_series) - Stairway to Heaven - Extremely popular with foreigners.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Girl_(2005_TV_series) - My Girl - Watch this with your girlfriend.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emperor_of_the_Sea - Emperor of the Sea - One of many historic Korean dramas Note that, there is more popular historic Korean Drama that's like the ancient Band of Brothers.
Read a lot more, these three are just the ones I like.

Taegukgi
If you watch this film and you don't even shed a single tear, you're a total sociopath and I recommend you see a doctor. This is a Korean version of Saving Private Ryan or any famous War films. This film is based on the forgotten war(Yes you bastards, we had a war with the North, that's why it's called the forgotten war, no one knows it >:|).
It's about two brothers forcefully enlisted/conscripted into the South Korean Army to fight against the communist North. The older brother enlists and goes into dangerous missions to earn the Medal of Honor to have his youngest fragile brother who has a heart condition go back home. But complications and tragic-ness arises.

Old Boy
A film about a man who was trapped in a film for 15 years and released, hellbent on getting vengeance against his captors. If you thought Japanese people were fucking crazy and bizarre in their films, wait till you see this. This doesn't even have that much gore, but the ending is PRETTY fucked up.

Silmido
You thought your country special forces were badass and dangerous? This is a film based on a true story of Unit 684. During the time after the civil war, everyone wanted the back then North Korean dictator dead. The North even attempted to assassinate back then South Korea President. In response, they created Unit 684.
They conscripted the most dangerous criminal convicts and took them into an island called Silmido. There, they trained them to become the elite of the elite special forces, the brutality of the training even making the Spetsnaz training looking like two queers skipping along a meadow field. The event and accuracy of the film was confirmed by the Minister.

Haeundae
Cried during this one too, it seems only Korean films nowadays can make me cry. This movie has many casts, each character is shown to the fullest, and not tossed away like trash like they were never there. This movie is about three different set of characters, each with tragic comings, being threatened by a tsunami that can kill the entire city. How I worded this sucks, just watch the movie.

Shiri
Pretty famous and put Korean cinema on the map. But I ashamedly acknowledge I never bothered to watch it, mostly because of no time. Film about something North Korean sleeper agent and a love triangle.
We have a LOT more Korean Drama and films than you think. Look it up in Imdb or wikipedia. When you have a chance to rent or buy media concerning South Korea, buy it, and you won't be let down. Everything I named here is merely a fraction of awesomeness that South Korea beholds.

it's about 2 brothers who were thrown into the korean war, and as the movie progresses shows the separation of the two, [sp]and then when the older brother's fiancee dies because she was accused of being a communist, the older brother snaps, and the younger brother is put into jail for helping his sister-in-law and older brother, and the general who jailed him ordered to burn the prison, but the younger brother escapes thanks to an old friend from the same unit, but because the older brother didn't know that, he had thought his brother had died, hence why the older brother sided with the communists in the end. The younger brother hears that his older brother is the leader of the Flag Unit, and goes back into battle in order to find him, they meet up, but his brother thinks he's an enemy and starts attacking, until finally he realizes it's his younger brother and that he's still alive. They both talk a bit, then the older brother holds the line with a machine gun as the younger brother escapes, and they promised to meet up later on, and in the end the bones that were found in the beginning were actually the older brother's.[/sp]
