I'm looking at buying Windows 7 but i'm not sure which one I should get. My computer supports 64bit but right now i'm running 32bit. They are both the same price. And i do know the difference between 64bit and 32bit. And on a side note what the difference between OEM and Retail. If you junk a computer and want to still use the os can you still put it on another comp with OEM?
Always get 64 bit. If you have more than 3 GB of RAM, 64 bit is required to access more than 3 GB (plus GPU RAM or something)
64 bit you lose support for absolutely archaic pieces of software in exchange for more memory
Just remember that in 64 bit unsigned drivers don't work or at least will give you a really hard time. I forget how I fixed it for myself.
Which version do you think Home Premium, Professional or Ultimate?
Which version do you think Home Premium, Professional or Ultimate?
premium
Its cheaper but are there advantages to having Ultimate or Professional?
Haven't once had a problem with drivers, unsigned or not.
Try to install ATI Tray tools :v: The commotion you have to go through to get that to run under a 64-bit windows OS is rediculous, why the hell they ever added this damn driver signing stuff is beyond me. (and no F8 -> Allow unsigned drivers doesn't work) You have to pput the OS into Test mode then disable the Test mode watermark :/

Nvidia drivers are fine.
ATI tray tools isn't an ATI product, It's a 3rd party application. I never said it was a windows problem. I just said it's a pretty dumb restriction. There are PLENTY of drivers out there that are unsigned, getting a driver signed is expensive for developers and small time application developers (Ati tray tools for example) can't afford to get every version they make signed. Another example would be early starforce games (Infact not THAT early, Trackmania sunrise), I tried to install it and it completly failed due to the signing restriction... (You have to jump through the hoops of getting the latest 64-bit SF driver...) Seems VMWare server also had an unsigned driver which caused it's installation to fail too, the only way to get that version to work is a registry edit... You can't say this issue doesn't exist just because you haven't encountered it
And on a side note what the difference between OEM and Retail. OEM can be transferred too, but you might have spend a few minutes on the phone with Microsoft's automated activation center. Edit: unless it's a branded OEM that came with a prebuilt computer, that can only be transferred to another prebuilt computer from that company.

get 64 bit. always whenever possible.
64bit unless you have an older laptop or any netbook
64-bit will give you quite a performance boost with applications compiled for it. VirtualDub, for example, renders about 30 percent faster for me! I have both versions installed, though, as application DLLs have to be compiled for them; most of my encoders are 32-bit only. Anyways, yeah, go for it! We went from 16 to 32 two decades ago; we can do the same today.

Quite incredible.
Try to install ATI Tray tools :v:
God, I don't even know how I got ATI Tray to work with my computer. It works on my account, but on my moms it pops up a warning and displays the temps as "0".
You should go with a 64-bit OS, even if you have 2GB or so of RAM. In the future if you ever upgrade, you won't have to reformat.
32-bit supports 4GB of RAM including vram
32 bit Windows only gave me 3072 MB of RAM to use.
Edit: unless it's a branded OEM that came with a prebuilt computer, that can only be transferred to another prebuilt computer from that company.
I work at a computer repair shop, and we take Dell and HP OEM stickers and use them on pretty much any brand of machine that doesn't come with an XP COA.
I use Pro and Ultimate, both 64-bit. The Pro installed in half the time, so it might become my primary choice.
Just remember that in 64 bit unsigned drivers don't work or at least will give you a really hard time. I forget how I fixed it for myself.
You can disable this nag-feature using BCDEDIT to start windows in "Test Mode". TCP-Z has a readme on how to do it. [editline]09:35AM[/editline]
Which version do you think Home Premium, Professional or Ultimate?
I'm currently working with Professional and it is fine. You can have up to 128 GB Ram, 2 CPUs and unlimited cores. This will be sufficient for most of the people. Home Premium is limited to 16 gb and also lacks some other features. It might be ok for you too.
Which version do you think Home Premium, Professional or Ultimate?
They're all good.
I preordered Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit myself.
I preordered Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit myself.
...why there is no reason at all to get 32
I'm on a laptop and I'm pretty sure I'm not going to upgrade anytime soon. Plus I wanted to do an upgrade without a full reformat.
it would've been a lot easier to invest in an external, especially for a laptop
