• What the fuck is happened to my connection?!

Okay. so i get back to my computer after the weekend, and trying to update an antivirus I find that it is downloading INCREDIBLY slowly. I go to speedtest.net, find a connection near where i live, and for some incredible reason, i have FAST SPEEDS! Now, i'm sure you people must be thinking why are you complaining? I normally get around .5/.6 MB download, and tonight im getting up to 7.68MB. And just now, i hit 15.11MB. What. The. Fuck. Please. why oh why is this happening? I am not unhappy, but... its just not right. Have my parents sneakily upgraded the connection after all my complaining? Have BT made a godawful mistake with my house's connection? Does FP even know? I will find out. I hope. Edit: Fuck, in my excitement i forgot completely about grammar in the title.
Lucky bitch.
BT gradually upgraded my friends connection, in a couple of months it went from about 7mb to 13mb, no idea why but he didn't complain :) Also has your ping always been that high?
Lucky!
Yeah, my connection has always been utter shite until tonight. But it does what it is supposed to, like my ANCIENT old computer i use for gaming.
They probably enabled ADSL2+ in your area
It's possible you're now on Fibre to the Cabinet. Well that's the only BT product I can imagine that would justify such a jump in speeds anyway. What's your town? Actually ignore me, that upstream speed is too low to be fibre to the cabinet. I guess it could be ADSL2 like BAZ said.
Sometimes ISPs have preview or trials for their fastest connection for a couple of days without telling their clients. Mine did that a week ago. I was downloading GTA IV on Steam at 2 MB p/s. It was quite awesome.
Edinburgh (Scotland) is my town, but i think this might have been something very odd. Been trying more testing, the speed went all the way up to 8MB, then slowly went down to zero. Ill post another connection speed thing in a moment. Edit: Seems to have ended, maybe it was merely a passing... something? Back to normality.
So you were originally on 0.50Mb/s or so? Dean in Edinburgh should now be a fibre to the cabinet enabled town, but BT generally don't connect people to that service if they can't get at least 15Mbit, so it seems unlikely it's that. Maybe there was just a fault all along, and with a switch to ADSL2, the fault was fixed? [editline]10:41PM[/editline] Sucks for you. Check out http://www.bt.com/infinity to see if you have access to their new service. Also, I sympathise.
I wouldn't be surprised, but it was nice while it lasted
True, but check out the link I posted anyway. Also, see if you're able to get Be as your ISP in your area, they should be able to squeeze more out of your connection. Maybe you'll actually get that 15Mbps as apparently your line can do it? And haha yeah I know. I should be getting about 20MBit when they switch me over to fibre to the cabinet though, looking forward to that
Yup, I think i may have convinced my parents to switch provider, but we seem to be stuck in a nasty contract for a couple of months more. Be is the one i am hoping to get them to switch to. It would be reaaaaaal nice. And lucky you, i always thought fibre optic would be awesome.
Well it's mostly fibre optic, it's fibre optic up until a point and then it's copper to the house so it's an up to 40Mbit service but I'd be happy with just 8Mbit. Like I said, Dean in Edinburgh was on BT's list for fibre to the cabinet upgrading, so it could be available to you. My connection seems to get slower every day.
Okay what the fuck. Its happened again! I know this ADSL2+ thing sounds reasonable, but according to BT, I should not be able to get this sort of speed! Edit: :smug: or :gonk: ?
They are testing if they can handle their customers downloading at that speeds.
Really? Well, its awesome nonetheless.
Lucky son of a bitch. I get nothing but pain and misery from BT. :(

wtf lag?
:smug: Yeah, I cheated and used speedtest.net on my dedicated server. What's weird is that the upload speed ranges from anywhere between 90 and 10 mbps depending on the speedtest server I'm testing it on. Is there some kind of site for testing the speeds of dedi servers? Mine's on a 100mbps line, would be nice to see whether it's shared or what... EDIT: Oh and OP, you're lucky. I'm still on 2mbps. Reliable 2mbps, but 2mbps all the same. For 20 quid a month. D: Really need to upgrade to 8meg. The upgrade's free for us on Zen, we just get our download quota slashed in half (can only download 50gig a month then).
(can only download 50gig a month then).
Whoa, I download more in a week
Nope, its 0.5/0.6MBs that i was calling shite. Also: It just gets better and better :smug:
If it goes any higher then your router will, explode :psyboom:
My advice for you is TO TORRENT AS MANY LINUX DISTROS ;) as YOU CAN!!!

BT quote me maximum of 2Mb on my lines, currently cruising on 16Mb on the same lines.
Sadly, the show seems to be over for the night folks, ill update tomorrow, or later if anything...interesting happens with it. Edit: I see some agrees in the title, has someone else experienced this, and is willing to share what happened?
