• $1300 build help

Finally have the chance to build my first rig, so I thought I'd probe the brains of experienced builders for an effective, cost efficient plan. Budget: $1300 Now, I find myself in a dilemma. I do intend on gaming on this rig @ 1080p, but its sole purpose is to edit photos, websites, videos; whatever my creative work entails. (Cpu intensive applications) Apps list: Adobe Suite; Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Premiere Pro, After Effects, Audition mainly. Autodesk; 3ds max, ect. Fortunately I have the keyboard, mouse, monitor and speakers to salvage. I'll need a 64 bit operating system, windows 8 will need to be included as well. Any help is greatly appreciated :)
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/2lwzx This is $31 over budget with shipping, but it's a very solid build. And yes, I did put a Xeon in there. It's a chip with hyperthreading (which his editing programs should be able to utilize for the most part) for $240. If he doesn't plan on overclocking, you can't beat that. You could honestly drop from a z87, due to that, but I've had a tough time finding H boards at an above average quality. Edit: I've got a friend that has almost this exact build, but with the ivy bridge version Xeon and a GTX 670. The main program he uses is Hitfilm, and he loves it.

Why include a $300 video card when all you need is a $30 one to render the desktop. Why in the world is there a 750W PSU? Why Winodws 8 pro? There's no reason to go for a z87 motherboard when you aren't overclocking. There is a plethora of quality motherboards in H87, H81, and B85 for drastically cheaper prices. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/2lN3Q No money wasted on the video card. Easily overclocked build, and the budget is so empty you can buy a high end air cooler like this: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/phanteks-cpu-cooler-phtc14pebk or even an H100i water cooler if you wanted a big overclock. Faster SSD. A PSU that will allow you to overclock very well, but isn't a waste. And Windows 8 non-professional because professional is just flat out unnecessary.
The OP does intend to play games in 1080P, though.
Hmm, I could have sworn I read the OP multiple times and missed that line. I must have seen "sole purpose" and thought that was actually the sole purpose. Anyway I also noticed that both of the builds mentioned in this thread don't include a hard drive which is flat out unnacceptable considering the work being done. 1 TB of storage is an absolute bear minimum. Here's a third build: PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks CPU: Intel Core i7-4770K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($323.98 @ SuperBiiz) CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($33.98 @ SuperBiiz) Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z87X-D3H ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($139.99 @ Amazon) Memory: PNY XLR8 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($129.97 @ TigerDirect) Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 250GB 2.5" Solid State Disk ($159.99 @ Adorama) Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($59.99 @ NCIX US) Video Card: MSI Radeon R9 270X 2GB Video Card ($217.27 @ TigerDirect) [You could also downgrade to a R9 270 without much performance loss, especially if you overclock it] Case: Corsair Carbide Series 300R Windowed ATX Mid Tower Case ($62.99 @ NCIX US) Power Supply: EVGA 600B 600W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply ($58.24 @ Mwave) Optical Drive: Lite-On iHAS124-04 DVD/CD Writer ($14.99 @ Newegg) Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8 (OEM) (64-bit) ($97.99 @ SuperBiiz) Total: $1293.40 (Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.) (Generated by PCPartPicker 2013-12-17 14:19 EST-0500) I still cast my vote for the 4770k. It won't be as cheap as a Xeon, but for gaming you really want it over a Xeon since server processors perform very poorly in those kinds of applications. 750 watts is also still unnecessary even for a GTX 770.

I also completely forgot the data drive. And as for Windows 8 Pro, I forgot that 8 Home Premium didn't have that 16gb RAM cap like 7 did, my bad. Edit: And I guess the 750 was in there from when I was linking my build. Musta just left it in there. Got it for 40 bucks on a black friday sale. Edit: Also if you drop to the Xeon, you'd have money left over for a cheaper second monitor, which I strongly suggest. Especially for editing work.
Unfortunately, I really can't find any proper benchmarks actually comparing the two processors on the given programs. I can't see it outperforming it honestly, but the xeon processors are certainly a cheaper option. It's up to the OP in the end.
