I don't know much about this sort of shit so please help. If I haven't given you all the specs you need just ask and I'll try to get them here
Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz
Graphics Card: AMD Radeon HD 6800 Series
I also only have 3.1 GB of ram which is weird as fuck, I don't even know
My suggestion, should pretty much max every current game unless you have a very high resolution monitor, a little over budget.

CPU: Intel I5 4690
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H97M-HD3
RAM: Corsair XMS3 8GB
GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 660 2GB
Total: £466.74

That includes a Corsair Builder 600W power supply which you may or may not need.

Sounds like you're running 32-bit. You could get a new version of Windows that's 64-bit. A upgrade would probably be a 770 or something, the CPU isn't that bad. How much RAM do you actually have (Under System it says - Actual & then available, you can find it in BIOS as well and as a last resort you can look at the RAM block itself)
BUT again, for any hardware upgrades that isn't RAM - knowing the PSU isn't a bad idea.

660 isn't that big a upgrade
So I should upgrade the GPU, get some more RAM and get Windows 8? My Windows is also telling me that my HDD is actually the slowest part of my computer, but does that effect actual performance, or rather just startup times etc? Finally, I think to get a better GPU I need a better Power Supply. Maybe also some better fans as it tends to get hot in my room already.
Yeah, GPU and PSU would probably be a good first step. Open system properties and check if you're running 32bit. I was running a q6600 and gtx 680 for a bit and still got good performance
Can I get away with 500W PSU with a 770? Or do I need to upgrade?
Could be fine. What's the brand and model?
No idea, is there an easy way to check?
Look at the side of the power supply.
There's absolutely nothing on it aside from electrical compliance stickers, it being 500W, and below 500W is says '230V7A50/60Hz'.
Is it unpainted and look like cheap metal?

Also did it come out of a prebuilt, or did you buy the power supply yourself?
It was made by someone I know and I bought it off them when they upgraded. It looks pretty well made and is painted black.
