Scientists discover dark matter - More like find evidence for it

[release]TANTALISING hints of dark matter, the mysterious substance thought to make up a quarter of the Universe, have been picked up for the first time in an American laboratory buried half a mile underground.
Scientists working on the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS), in the disused Soudan iron ore mine in Minnesota, announced late yesterday that they had detected two events with the signature of the weakly-interacting massive particles (WIMPs), thought to make up dark matter.
If the signals are confirmed by further observations, that will begin next year, they would rank as one of the most important recent advances in physics and understanding of the cosmos.[/release]
They haven't discovered it, more like found more evidence for it's existence
Woops, forgot the source: http://www.news.com.au/world/scientists-discover-dark-matter/story-e6frfkyi-1225811938405
:science:
WIMPs? Pussies.
Hahaha.
Doing it for SCIENCE!!! :science:
Awesome. I remember watching a show about CDMS on the Science Channel where they just sat around and played ping pong waiting for it to detect something.
Glad their marathon ping pong tournament can finally be ended.
They say dark energy is the cause for the universe's expansion continuously accelerating.
I think that dark energy is not something contained within this universe, but the outside "nothingness" tugging on the fabric of space.
It's similar to popping a balloon in a vacuum. The gas will continue to expand outwards.

Dark matter?

But which universe would we go to? All the other good ones are full.

there's only one universe

Dark matter could be in multiple universes at the same time too :science:
I bet we're one universe within a mega universe

Ping pong and science... by god, those men live like kings.

How do you know that, there can be billions of universes that we can't even see because they are so far away
Maybe we live in a locker which leads to a world that is also in a locker.

You're thinking Galaxies, other Universes would have to exist on another plane of existence from our own. So, it would be like an alternate universe or a multiverse, that exists at the same time but in different space from our own.
oh ok sorry

I watched that too, I'm glad they found something, hope it's not a fluke

"Scientist: Why wouldn't they listen?
Scientist: We tried to warn them!
Scientist: I never thought I'd see a resonance cascade, let alone create one. "

On Wednesdays at uni when everyone had half the day free, lots of the physics lecturers would set up a ping pong table in one of entrances and play.

maybe we are the lockers. :tinfoil:
I was actually in this laboratory once, I was younger, and at the time they were using it to launch particles to California, or something like that. I was there on a tour of the mine itself, which was pretty cool, but when the tour was over, the tour guide realized that he was a bit ahead of schedule. So he was just like, "well, that was the mine... you wanna see this giant laboratory hiding behind this door?" Me being about seven or eight at the time, I couldn't really appreciate what they were doing in there. Random fact, I suppose.

That's ignorant to say. You're no scientist, you're not god, you're in no position of authority or credibility to be making that statement so therefore, shut the fuck up.

I concur. There's no way to actually know 100% if we are the only universe or not.

i am sorry but do you actually watch that show
I concur. There's no way to actually know 100% if we are the only universe or not.
But it's still ignorant to say that there isn't one because there is no support, and nothing to refute it. I'm not arguing that there is the existence of a multiverse, just not to cross out the possibility of something without having the knowledge or capability to make that statement with certainty, or atleast some sort of supporting argument behind your logic.

Of course he doesn't!
[sp]they canceled it![/sp]
Minnesota! Awesome.
