• Oil and gas discovered off Falkland Islands
A group of British exploration companies have discovered oil and gas in an offshore area north of the Falkland Islands, which could raise tensions with Argentina over their disputed ownership. Falkland Oil and Gas, which shares the exploration area with Rockhopper and Premier Oil, said the 'Zebedee' exploration well was "better than expected". The London-listed oil explorers found an oil reservoir 25 metres thick and a gas deposit 17.5m thick sandwiched between sands. The well was drilled on a licence area that is 40pc owned by Falkland Oil and Gas, 36pc Premier Oil, and 24pc Rockhopper Exploration.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/energy/oilandgas/11510866/Oil-and-gas-discovered-off-Falkland-Islands.html
Well, I haven't heard much of Argentina lately; guess that will change now.
If I recall correctly, wasn't there plans recently to build a military base on the island? I wonder if those are going to be sped up now.
I'd say this probably doesn't really change anything. Argentina has been disputing the islands for nationalist centric reasons since they got handled in the Falklands war. Nowadays they are a paper tiger and have no capacity to take over the islands from a military standpoint, and the residents of the island have demonstrated no desire whatsoever to become a part of Argentina.
Awesome, things are looking up for the Falklanders.

The Falklands already have a garrison on them, the recent plans were essentially just to update them and make sure they're all good.
If I recall correctly, wasn't there plans recently to build a military base on the island? Woo hoo, here we go again. More random stupid shit about these islands. I really, really wish I hadn't been born here.
*Bitchfit from Argentina ensues*
Suck it, Argentina
Forget Argentina, now the US will be trying to liberate the Falklands from the British
Forget Argentina, now the US will be trying to liberate the Falklands from the British
According to ancient Chinese maps, the Falkland Islands have always belonged to China.
Forget Argentina, now the US will be trying to liberate the Falklands from the British
Freedom experts are reportedly on their way to find out how free this oil is.
According to ancient Chinese maps, the Falkland Islands have always belonged to China.
According to Giorgio Tsoukalos it has always belonged to aliens
Freedom experts are reportedly on their way to find out how free this oil is.
Hell yeah! We're gonna liberate the shit outta the place!
op please refer to the malvinas by their correct name thanks ok
I read somewhere that China was selling weapons to Argentina and had a military base in Namibia. Maybe a Chinese oil company could set up shop here?
This isn't the first time Oil and Gas has been found down there, and I imagine that just like last time, it won't actually be exploited because it isn't worth the investment required for the facilities to be built on the Falklands themselves, and for rigs to be moved down there etc. Honestly, they're looking into Aquaculture as a potential economic boost for the island and it seems like it might be more viable (I have family down there).
Ha! I knew it - there had to be oil down there. The UK government wouldn't be holding onto it purely because that's what the islanders want.
Suck it, Argentina
damn argies wont let go of the grudge, which is why im gonna take every chance i get to mock them for no reason
Ha! I knew it - there had to be oil down there. The most valuable resource on the Falklands islands is the blood spilt in winning it back in 1982. (okay that sounds too poetic let me explain) What I mean is this: To lose the Falklands now after the price paid in 1982 would be political suicide, though I'm sure Oil will help justify it further as a 'UK vital interest'.
I read somewhere that China was selling weapons to Argentina and had a military base in Namibia.
damn argies wont let go of the grudge, which is why im gonna take every chance i get to mock them for no reason
every thread about the falklands is this dumb circle jerk, even more amusing are those who believe argentina will REALLY try invade the falklands again, when such attempt would be political suicide, and that's assuming they even have the manpower to pull that off.
