• Laptop crashed during ChkDsk, restarted to "No operating system found"

I have this Laptop, a Sony Vaio PCG-71912L. It was put onto my desk and I was told to fix it because it ran slow. So the first thing I tried to do was boot in safe mode and see what kind of crapware was installed. It ran incredibly slow, even with like, six processes running, so I ran Check Disk on it. First off, it took a LONG TIME for a 500GB hard drive, and second, it crashed during step four! I didn't manage to get down what was written on the BSOD, but when I attempted to start it again, I was greeted with "No Operating system found" I attempted to restart into last known good configuration, but that failed after selecting "Windows 7" and hitting F8 for the advanced options (Flipped back to the Vaio Logo and then to No OS screen again) I tried to plug the HDD into my desktop to see if the files were there, but all it does is make explorer slow, and checkdisk for my desktop doesn't even recognize it (Comes up as raw) I'm at a loss and getting extremely frustrated because this isn't my laptop. The Hard Drive spins up, and doesn't click-click-click, but I need to find a solution that isn't formatting the drive and reinstalling OS. Edit: The OS on the laptop is/was Windows 7 Home Premium OA and the Hard Drive is a Seagate ST9500325AS (So says device manager) [editline]21st December 2013[/editline] Addendum: I am currently using TestDisk to try and read and recover the drive, but analyzing it comes up with "Partition: Read Error" I feel well and truly screwed.
Try this: http://www.partition-recovery.com/ If check disk crashed in the middle of a scan, it probably hosed the file system. Your best route at this point is to recover as much stuff as possible and do a reformat and reinstall. Though before you reinstall, you might want to run memtest (www.memtest.org) because the laptop might have bad RAM (that caused the BSOD.)
I'll give partition Recovery a shot, thanks mate.
Chances are the HDD was on its way out.
Pepper;43284416']Chances are the HDD was on its way out.
That's what I was thinking, it would explain the erraticness I was told about beforehand.
If only you had a copy of SpinRite, you could try that. Just to explain, SpinRite is a disk repair and maintenance utility that attempts to work as close to the bare metal as possible to recover drives that are failing with bad sectors. Because it works at such a low level, it can recover drives that Windows-based utilities can't. (It boots into FreeDOS when you start up the computer with SpinRite in the drive.) Disclaimer: I'm not a shill for the program, I just own it and use it and it's rescued a few drives for me. It's also about $90, so it isn't a trivial tool.

When one of the CTO of the company I worked for, and his HDD crashed and the rest of the onsite technicians couldn't do a damn thing except tell him "yeah its toast!", I said, We'll I'l do it give me a week. 2 days in, one of the onsite techs sabotaged my recovery computer and caused it to freeze up half way. I found out how did it, and promptly had his ass fired. Restored his drive, and i never saw an executive smile til that day. [editline]24th December 2013[/editline] And I used spinrite for that operation. I will NEVER turn away from it. It can take a while, but holy shit its worth every single bit of time.
