Is SLI really needed for single-monitor resolution?

Hey guys, I wanted to see peoples opinions on this.
Well my system is a GTX 460 1GB SC, 8GB DDR3, with Core i5-2500k @ 3.3GH x4, cost about $1000
I am able to max out basically every game I try with all AA at 1920x1080. Crysis 1, I get 35FPS. Anything above 30FPS is playable for me. Games like Black Ops get 90 FPS. With games like BC2 and GTA:4 I get 50FPS. With the new Crysis 2 update, I get about 30. So it made me wonder..
People spend up to $1000 just for two GTX 580's because they think they need that to run a game like Crysis? Now if you had a resolution of 5760x1080 that is understandable.
So it made me wonder, does anyone feel its necessary to SLI a rig unless you are a super enthusiast? I ask this because my motherboard doesn't support SLI, and I don't want that to make my PC feel inferior.
Yes, SLI obviously is better then non-sli, but the question here is, do you think it will EVER be needed for smooth gameplay on any game? Because I have yet to see a game that NEEDS SLI to run maxed out smoothly. I don't ask this because I'm a noob, I've built three or four computers, I've just never SLI'd before, so no flaming please :>
It is nice to have max settings on Cyrsis and get 9001 FPS, but no - it's not neccessary.
A single 570/580/590/6950/6970/6990 would be fine, imo.
SLI is almost needed for metro 2033 1080p maxed with 4xaa, If you want the AA then you'll need two GPU's.
If you're looking for MAX, then yes you will need SLI. If you're alright with less than highest options with atleast 30fps, then no, a 570 or so will handle it find with a 1080p or lower resolutions.

Well when the BF3 beta comes out and if I can't max it out with at least 35FPS then I will buy a 570.
