But the question remains... what would you print? I would make a custom Half Life 2 Chess set. Still thinking about how it would work though. Gordon-King Breen-King Alyx-Queen Mossman-Queen and so on.
3rd thread I've seen on this in the GD this year alone. But indeed, they are pretty awesome.
My school has two of these, nothing new. You can't really print out stuff that high-quality on them though, because they have to set the machine in a way that makes it use a ton of plastic. You have the buy the plastic in cartridges, and according to my engineering design teacher, only the manufacturer of the machine sell them, and they're like $200 a cartridge.
If you think it'll actually save you money you're dead wrong because 3D printers cost around $10,000+ unless it's fab@home
As the technology progresses, they'll become cheaper and cheaper. Soon, no one will use 2D pansy printers.
Aw fuck, it's $50,000. There goes my dream.
The models that these machines create are quite brittle
We've already had one FPer modeling and printing airsoft accessories in the airsoft forum.
The models that these machines create are quite brittle
typically used for making molds.
So logically all the annoying problems, inexplicable driver issues, and unintelligible error messages on normal printers are multiplied by a power of 2 in this instance, then?
http://www.fabathome.org/ Have fun making your own 3d printers. This one can print anything you put into it, like putting accurate pictures made of frosting on a cake. here's a picture of the completed machine. I wanted to make one once, but I never got the parts.
How hard could it be?
you can make this out of wood if you wanted to, its the motors that stopped me. its a really easy project. here's the project's tutorial or something. http://www.fabathome.org/wiki/index.php?title=Fab%40Home:Model_1_Overview

My science teacher had one of those made of for a molecule diagram. Its more fragile than a wine glass.

[editline]07:14PM[/editline] Oh that's for a model 2

Saw this on Machines! the other day. Cool thing nonetheless. [editline]08:38PM[/editline] Also, the one I saw on Machines! could print in less than half an hour, so this one is shit compared to the others.
My school has one

Damn.....these things have a long way to go. They're more of a "machine" than a "printer". You shouldn't really have to do all those extra steps after the model is printed out such as removing the excess powder. I'm kind of surprised about the amount of labor involved to use one of these things.
The high school I'm going to next year has one and they let the student in my program use it for free. I can't wait.
Fucking amazing. I never knew that one of these existed.
They've been around for a while, bro. Also, they're used to make 3D models physical for designers, the models themselves aren't that strong.
That first movie looked like something out of a Sci-fi film. Sticking a huge canister into a slot. then the machine melts that block and the guy dusts off a gray part to revel that it's perfectly colored. At least that's what it looked like in the video. probably not as good in real life.
I would like one
I saw this on 2057, except they were printing 3d heart valve replacements instead of models. Pretty sweet, if I had the cash, I'd get one.
I have no use for cheap plastic toys, but I plan to build a foundry in my backyard over the summer. This, however, would be useful for lost wax casting.
