i've got this relatively decent rig here. it'll last over a year yet easily and further at lowered settings. but i'd like to be able to improve on it bit by bit. trouble is... my motherboard has reached it's limit. it lacks support fo DDR3 ram and SLI/CXfire.
specs:
Motherboard: O5QL-PRO
CPU: Intel Core Quad Q9550 OC to 3.4GHz
GPU: GTX260 overclocked. (performs around 280)
Ram: 2x2GB DDR2-SDRAM 800MHz
PSU: some shit 650w thing (my friends of same brand blew) can't remember name.
Cooling: stock. (i've got no heating in my room, so i live at temperatures between 10-15 degrees C. my system is cold as hell)
what i first planned to do was to get: Asus P5N-D and throw in another 260 GTX in SLI to keep it going longer.
my other idea was: XFX Nforce 790i Ultra SLI invest in DDR3 ram and throw in another 260 when needed.
these are my choices and it is also my max boundaries. i CANNOT change my whole rig around for über raep. that is why i've narrowed it down to this. i just need to know if this is proportionate with my CPU and what type of ram to go with. i've no idea about the difference between the ram beyond "faster" so some input there would be nice.
basically, please advice me about what's wisest.
please, by all means, suggest just as cheap alternatives.
and do not hesitate to flash some knowledge, enlighten me.
your rig is fine, save your money for a kick ass rig in a year or two, no point getting small bits at a time as it will become redundant after without a full rig
You build is pretty much solid maybe a 5870 but the rest is fine.
Don't get another 260 now, wait until Nvidia release a new set of cards and buy it then, it will be much cheaper.

hmm, sounds fine. i was always unsure just how "good" this rig was.
You build is pretty much solid maybe a 5870 but the rest is fine.
so my 260 is not proportionate with my CPU? just HOW powerful is that CPU? wouldn't 5870 be bottlenecked?

If would not be a noticable upgrade if you got an i7 for a comparison.

that sounds pretty damn good.
There's no such thing as "future-proofing".

Its really impossible to future proof, stuff goes out of date so quick...

yeah, after surfing some hours after creation, i realized my own idiocy. but there is gambling on the future.

Well pretty much your rig is pretty solid atm. So no upgrading needed.

there is to a certain extent, i mean, its not TOTALLY future proofing, but the socket 1366 is more ''future proof" I.E last longer than the socket 775

still, the choice between 1366 and 1166 is what i'd call a gamble.

Just upgrade a bit at a time if you can't afford an entirely new rig and slowly swap out parts, and overtime, you'll have a new rig.

It costs just as much, but isn't all bought at one time.

leaving upgrade options open and "future-proofing" are different things

not really, one's the server/workstation socket the other is the mainstream socket
they'll probably last as long as each other
