A: Nanowrimo is an acronym for National Novel Writing Month, which is a 30 day period in which participants write a novel, script, short story or nonfiction book that is 50,000 words or more. However, due to its growing popularity, there are 2 “Camps” that take place in April and July, where participants can adjust their word goals and work at their own pace for the month. Q: What do I do when the camp begins? A: When the Camp starts, word counts open up at the stroke of midnight. By this point, you will have been given the choice to join a “cabin”. Q: What is a Cabin? A: A “Cabin” is a group of participants randomly chosen to be grouped up with you. You can share progress, assist one another, and just generally chat about how things are going. There are mini goals for cabins as well to spice things up. Q: Is There An FP Cabin? A: Of course! Just send me a PM with your Camp Nanowrimo account, make sure you have a project set up, and you'll receive an invite! Q: What happens when I finish? A: You wrote a novel! A whole freakin’ novel! Much of Nanowrimo is simply to let people express themselves creatively and allow oneself to write what they wish. Q: What happens if I don’t finish? A: No biggie! Simply participating and giving it your best is good enough. There’s no penalty for not finishing, and you can continue your novel at your own pace. Q: Are you writing a novel? A: Indeed I am! Below the FAQ, there is a list of participants and links to their member pages on the Nanowrimo website. Q: What’s the biggest first tip you can give someone? A: Don’t write something that you think will sell, write the book that you want to read. Pre-Nano Tip of the Day When to Write Writing is obviously the hugest part of the whole Nano experience. However, it's really easy to get yourself tripped up by missing a day or saying "i'll add those 300 words tomorrow" too many "tomorrows" in a row. The easiest way to counter this is to simply write the instant you get up for as long as you can, and for as long as you can before bed. As crazy as that sounds, you'll get a huge amount written at those times than you would if you tried to hammer it out at around lunchtime. You'll have a quicker moving mind, less going on, and it's just easier. Of course, it's not a bad idea to write whenever you can too, but those 2 times are the ones I've found to be the least stressful.
I never manage to do Camp NaNo since it always seems to fall when I'm busy.. and this year I have a guest staying for ALL of July inbetween holidays- so good luck to everyone taking part! I'll use your incredible boasts of success and three-part book deals as motivation in August. I'm curious, since you can set whatever aim you want and write what you want at the Camp, what have you guys set as daily word goals, and are you diverging from writing novels?
I'm curious, since you can set whatever aim you want and write what you want at the Camp, what have you guys set as daily word goals, and are you diverging from writing novels?
I'm going with the regular 50k words and sticking with novels (starting up a series). Usually, 1660 words per day gets the job done, but I tend to splooge on days when I don't have anything planned (weekends usually). It's gonna be a bit tough considering that I'm doing college classes too. [editline]26th June 2015[/editline] Also this will be the third novel that I'll be writing.
Hiveword is an extremely useful resource. It lets your organize characters, scenes, locations, plot, etc. in super-duper detail, and I'd really recommend at least dabbling with it when you get the chance.
Also, I personally recommend doing your writing on something like Word, for the sole reason that it isn't dependent on internet connectivity on something like Google Drive.
I'm going to regret saying it, but I'm IN! Let's do this shit.
I'm going to regret saying it, but I'm IN! Let's do this shit.
You're goddamn right you're in. Obligatory: [t]http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2013/089/9/b/hereforever_by_fartprincess-d5ztsoc.jpg[/t]
So are we all gonna be cabinmates or are we just going to find different 'cabins' ?
Well gee, kinda wish I'd have heard of this earlier. I'd join in, but I'm already writing something that's about to push 55/60k soon, so it's probably best not to start another one. Good luck to anyone who is!
So are we all gonna be cabinmates or are we just going to find different 'cabins' ?
We can be cabinmates im p. sure you can opt out/make an invite one [editline]27th June 2015[/editline]
Well gee, kinda wish I'd have heard of this earlier. Here's what you can do: Take however many words you'd like to get to, and subtract what you have now. Then, you can have your own smaller, personalized word goal for the month!
Title: Neon Bullets Synopsis: An out-of-business detective takes the case of a lifetime; one that leads him into a world of mystery, corruption, and death in a cyberpunk-flavored tale. Going to start working on the characters and maybe draw out a few plot-points now. Prep up for the starting day.
Pre-Nano Tip of the Day Find your Elixr/Ambrosia This is oddly enough one of the most important aspects when it comes to writing. You gotta know what you want to eat/drink. For many, it's a good old fashioned PB&J sandwich with a coffee on the side. Find what you like, and it's best that you have it if you plan on writing first thing in the morning. It'll give you the boost you need alongside a lovable little meal to go with your writing. Bonus points if you eat food/drink something you're writing about (Dried meat, bourbon, coke, etc.)
I think I'm in. I had an rough outline for a comic maybe, using multiple ideas of mine, and using my first planned DnD character but in a 80's themed cyberpunk city and him being a vigilante named Spellthief. But I'm more interested in novel or screenwriting so I'll should give this a go.
Pre-Nano Tip of the Day Word Vomit As disgusting as it sounds, being able to "word vomit" is one of the most important skills a writer can have. "Word Vomit" is essentially just slamming all of your ideas onto the page and caring only about spelling/horrendous grammar errors as you go. Word vomit is important because it allows writers to get thousands of words into their writing without getting caught up by "oh does this sound good?" or "I should change that". Word vomit is just like it sounds, getting it all out and worrying about cleanup later. --- PS 1) I've written 2 novels before during 30 day sessions (haven't edited them), so I consider myself amply "skilled" to share knowledge/give advice 2) Instructions to join FP Cabin are now in OP
Just because you wrote two novels doesn't mean you're a novel expert :v:
Just because you wrote two novels doesn't mean you're a novel expert :v:
I didn't say I was an expert, I said that I think I got a handle on how to do things [editline]28th June 2015[/editline] Also does anyone else use Word for their writing? I tried to use Google Docs but I just didn't like it for some reason, maybe it was the internet connectivity requirement idk
So I'm in, why not? I remember doing one 3 years ago and suddenly killing off the protagonists when I met my word limit despite to resolving any plot stuff because I'd burned out and just wanted to play Halo.
Decided to pound out 'round 1300 words today on a whim. Feel like I should get a head start in case I run into any bigass assignments during my classes

Pre-Nano Tip of the Day Setting Goals If you're going for 50k, you'll be having the "regular" goal of 1660 words per day. Of course, you'll find yourself busy sometimes or just unable to write that much. What should you do? Write on the weekends more than the weekdays, as odd as that sounds. Writing 1900-2000 words on Saturday and Sunday will allow you to get a bit caught up and can alleviate pressures on weekdays. Of course, relying on only weekends will not get you there. A second thing is to try and keep your schedule in mind. Busy tomorrow? Write a snotload today. Burnt out today? Add a couple extra hundred words to the next few days.
I really want to participate in this this year, and since i'm on uni holidays with nothing to do it'll be a good waste of time. Dunno what i'll write about though, should start thinking that up.
Pre-Nano Tip of the Day Get Ready Tomorrow's the big day. No real tip here. Just breathe in, and get writing the instant it hits midnight.
