• Tried fixing vista bootloader. Worked, but not really

:siren:FIXED:siren: Gah, So I woke up this morning to find that the family computer (not mine) had this gigantic error on the screen about ACPI memory. It said that it couldn't load vista because it couldn't find it's bootloader. So I fixed it. (I think?) But now, for some stupid reason, it's giving me this screen EVERY time I try to boot up windows. [IMG]http://imgur.com/HNl0N.jpg[/IMG] It looks like a diagnostic tool. That doesn't help me very much seeing as though I've already fixed the problem. So uh. What do I do? :v: [editline]01:27PM[/editline] Oh. And when I press exit, it goes back to the startup screen where you can choose to load up the BIOS and what not.
It would help if you detail [b][u]exactly[/u][/b] what you did to "fix" it. Also post full detailed system specs, because you should always post it for any problem, so people don't have to ask for it if they need it. Silly hunch here, but do you have the vista CD in your drive still?

Then I typed in these commands [code]diskpart select disk 0 select partition 1 (Selecting windows partition) active exit (Exiting diskpart) bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd y (I would like to rebuild bcd on partiton 1)[/code] It then rebuilds the bootloader and tells me that it's completed successfully. But now I get this diagnostic tool. :frown: I don't know what's in this computer but it's a XPS m2010. (It's not mine as I said) And no, even if I don't have the disk in the drive it still does this. [editline]02:17PM[/editline] Ok, so I tried that again and now it's telling me there are no windows installations on the partition when there were after I did this the first time. [editline]02:18PM[/editline] Yet windows recovery tool finds it. [editline]02:19PM[/editline] Ok never mind, wrong partition. Trying again. It's actually partition 3. [editline]02:21PM[/editline] Double never mind. It's still not finding the installation.

[/QUOTE] That seems awfully complicated, from what I remember it's just one or two commands to fix the bootloader.
fixmbr from Recovery Console. That's all you needed. Are you sure that the disc isn't still in?
Just checked, it's bootrec /fixmbr and bootrec /fixboot to fix the bootloader, where did you get that complicated method from? [editline]09:27PM[/editline] Ninja
Gah, shit. I had tried fixmbr but never heard of fixboot. Gonna try that now. [editline]02:53PM[/editline] Woop! Thanks guys, I got it fixed now. :v:
