The Grateful Dead promoted a sense of community among their crew and followers resulting in a huge cult following, people who are fans of the Grateful Dead are appropriately named Deadheads and are closely associated with the hippie movement of the 1960's. The Grateful Dead are known for their tours playing over 2000 concerts in the 30 years they were active. The Grateful Dead disbanded after the death of Jerry Garcia in 1995, many of the former members of the Grateful Dead play concerts to this day. The Grateful Dead had a large amount of members throughout its existance. I will only be covering the founding members of The Grateful Dead. Jerry Garcia Jerry Garcia was one of the founding members of The Grateful Dead and is often referred to as the leader and soul of the Dead. Like all members of The Grateful Dead, Jerry was a consumer of drugs. Marijuana, nitrous oxide, LSD and speed. But in the later years of the Dead he became addicted to heroin, he would try to kick his addiction several times and was frequently in drug rehabilitation facilities. Unfortunately his addiction would lead to his death. In 1995 Jerry Garcia suffered a heart attack and died while staying at a rehabilitation facility in California. Bob Weir Bob Weir played rhythm guitarr throug The Grateful Dead's 30 year existance. He was often criticised early on in the Dead for not pulling his weight in the band and he would eventually take a short break from The Grateful Dead 1968, falling out with Lesh and Garcia. He returned shortly as a full time member of the Dead. He still plays concerts to this day. Ron "Pigpen" McKernan Pigpen played the organ and harmonica and often sang. He drank heavily and was diagnosed with liver damage in 1970. Because of his illness he had to stop touring in 1972 and died in 1973 at the age of 27. In an interview with Phil Lesh, Phil mentions that Pigpens illness was a contributing factor the sad theme of American Beauty. Phil Lesh Phil Lesh played the bass guitar in The Grateful Dead and is often considered an innovator in the development of the electric bass during the mid to late 1960s. Phil Lesh wasn't primarily a lyricist but he would occasionally contribute to the bands repertoire, with songs such as Box of Rain and New Potato Caboose. He is still very musically active at the age of 74 but has taken a temporary hiatus for 2014 Bill Kreutzmann Bill Kreutzmann was the drummer of The Grateful Dead and was its youngest member. During the early years of The Grateful Dead Kreutzmann had to use a fake ID to be able to get in to bars where the band had their gigs. Kreutzmann is also only one of three members in the Dead that were a part of their every show, together with Jerry Garcia and Phil Lesh. I haven't really been too into the grateful dead until I saw Joe Russo's Almost dead last night. It's such a wonderful live experience, the albums simply don't do it justice. Very chill music. I imagine the dead themselves were great. The string cheese incident reminds me a little bit of them too.
aaa I wished I saw them live. Some of their live albums really send you places, gr8 guitar noodling.
Jerry Garcia managed to achieve one of the most sparkly organic clean guitar tones ever.
You find the real hidden gems in their live stuff. I can't begin to imagine how many hours I've spent on Archive.org and other sites listening to bootlegs, outtakes and concerts. Someone on SA compiled a GD Spotify playlist compiling all their live stuff(that's available on Spotify.) in chronicle order. I did not listen to the Grateful Dead prior to going to my school. At my university (UC Santa Cruz) we have a class called "Music of the Grateful Dead". In the libraries, we have all their music available for us to listen to, which is nice. We also have a Grateful Dead rendition of our mascot meditating, Sammy the Slug. We call it the Grateful Slug. The original is just know as the Zen Slug. [t]http://puu.sh/cEA1H/51dfcbd3cc.jpg[/t] [t]http://puu.sh/cEAj3/a468fdd569.jpg[/t]
Always been a fan of Dark Star, particularly this version here: I like their music but I love the Dead's aesthetic. I have this rad tapestry hung horizontally over my bed: [t]http://hippyboutique.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Grateful_Dead_Tapestry_72013.jpg[/t]
