Facebook has begun installation of 10,000 Blu-ray discs in a prototype storage cabinet as back-ups for users' photos and videos. Such a system will reduce its costs by 50% and use 80% less energy compared to traditional storage, the firm said.
I'll believe that it uses less energy, since the discs won't be spinning 24/7, but traditional HDD storage is so absurdly cheap (and reusable) that I find it really hard to believe that bluray is cheaper.

Odds are as soon as the blu-ray is finished burning the content will be out of date.
archival disc is kind of a lame name
It won't catch on, just because of the name. DVD? Got a nice ring to it. HD-DVD sounded silly, but Blu-ray now THAT'S next-gen. Plus the acronym can be rather... well, imagine if someone comes up with an Archival Disc Hard Drive or something.

Maybe we can call it an Arc. Hand me that Winnie the Pooh Arc so I can play it on my brand new Arc player.
