TAIPEI (Reuters) - Foxconn Technology Group, the top maker of Apple Inc's iPhones and iPads whose factories are under scrutiny over labor practices, has raised wages of its Chinese workers by 16-25 percent from this month, the third rise since 2010. In a statement on Friday, Taiwan-based Foxconn said the pay of a junior level worker in Shenzhen, southern China, had risen to 1,800 yuan ($290) per month and could be further raised above 2,200 yuan if the worker passed a technical examination. It said that pay three years ago was 900 yuan a month. "As a top manufacturing company in China, the basic salary of junior workers in all of Foxconn's China factories is already far higher than the minimum wage set by all local governments," the statement said. "We will provide more training opportunities and learning time, and will continuously enhance technology, efficiency and salary, so as to set a good example for the Chinese manufacturing industry." The announcement comes after Apple, criticized over working conditions at its sprawling chain of suppliers in China, said this week a U.S. non-profit labor group had begun an "unprecedented" inspection of working conditions at its main contract manufacturers. Working practices at Foxconn's huge plants in China came under intense scrutiny in 2010 after a series of suicides among young workers. Last June three workers died in an explosion at a Foxconn plant in Chengdu, western China. Last month the New York Times published an investigation into working practices at Apple supplier's plants in China that documented poor health and safety conditions and long working hours. In response Apple said the Washington D.C.-based Fair Labor Association would monitor conditions at supplier plants beginning Feb 14. In an interview with Reuters on Feb 15, the FLA's president said that conditions at Apple supplier plants in China were far better than those at garment factories or other facilities elsewhere in the country. The last time Foxconn Group raised wages was in June 2010, when the pay of its Chinese workers went up by over 30 percent. $290 a month? God damn, no wonder everybody gets China to build their shit. That's fucking ridiculous. About fucking time they get a pay raise of some sort though.
A step in the right direction I'd say.
$290 a month? God damn, no wonder everybody gets China to build their shit. That's fucking ridiculous. About fucking time they get a pay raise of some sort though.
Better than a lot of places where people live on less than a dollar a day.
You mean Foxconn gave them a raise?
You mean Foxconn gave them a raise?
Mind as well be Apple. Foxconn won't fuck around if Apple tells them to do something.
Funny thing is the only reason they're doing it is because of all the attention. If nothing was made of the accidents or poor conditions no one would care sadly. Glad something is happening though, it is about time.

I'd like to be able to compare it with other companies in the region, but right now i'd say their situation drastically improved. Even if they did it because of outside pressure it's a good thing. If it wasn't for a rich western company they would've still been competing with local businesses.
I suspect that no one will ever pass the technical evaluation

They get paid less than a dollar a day, run through any weather, and normally get infections due to being barefoot. If there's glass with no way around, they will run through it, and then get paid possibly ten cents if they are lucky. These people deserve a fucking medal.

Because i am pretty sure India and China don't compare economy wise, or atleast not in the field of assembly line paychecks. Just thinking about India makes me sad.
Whoops, I fell into an alternate universe where apple is nice
Well, Apple can certainly fucking afford to.
this isn't a "step" in any direction, they're doing it because they want people to forget about Foxconn for the time being [editline]17th February 2012[/editline] which people will of course i mean come in, in the US you can't even get any news off of any channel because everything is just about Whitney Houston
Apple isn't nice. They used a tiny amount of their budget to improve their public appearance after foxconn got attention again. Edit: It's like a millionaire giving a hobo 5 bucks this once when he's in a good mood and then he gets treated like he's actually charitable.
that's like a dollar an hour!
So when are the other major electronics manufacturers going to help improve working conditions at Foxconn?

They're probably still working way harder than what they're getting.
Mind as well be Apple.
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=mind%20as%20well Sorry, but if you keep saying it you're going to continue to look like an idiot.

itt Apple tries to make themselves look nice by giving the poor Chinese people that manufacture their crap an insignificant amount of money.
This is good for the people working at the manufacturing plants, I am glad that they are getting something that they really do deserve.
Apple is paying them more so that they shut their mouths.
itt Apple tries to make themselves look nice by giving the poor Chinese people that manufacture their crap an insignificant amount of money.
They doubled their pay, stop letting your apple hate make you retarded. They use Foxconn because they stand to make massive profit on the production of their goods. Obviously it would be terrible business practice to go and make it so the poor little Chinese workers earn the same as US minimum wage or they'd just make their shit in the US.
Why is everyone saying Apple? Foxconn raised the wages. Apple just happens to be one of many companies that uses them.
Apple is paying them more so that they shut their mouths.
This is one part of the medal, yes. But on the other hand it still benefits those who really need it, even though I think it's too less - yet I don't know how much you could consider this to be in china. At least it is some kind of benefit for them.
