Sad though, i think a cheap PC Kinect could be quite a hit since there are many indie developers who i think would welcome the idea of having a accessible kinect for PC.
Well shit. About a year and a half ago I bought two Kinects to capture mo-cap animations for a project I was working on. I think It costed around 70-80 bucks for each one, and all I wanted to be was the end user, not the software developer. That price tag really sucks for some one like me who wants to use it with an application rather than being the one who makes it. Damn, and I really wanted to try my mo-cap set up with the new kinects, guess I won't be doing that for some time..
I figure the Kinect will be used for animating more than gaming on a PC
I might invest in one, I used the original Kinect quite a bit on the PC.
The article makes out like it's supposed to be used for gaming on PC. It's obviously not, it's for experimentation and MoCap. The only PC type where it would be used for gaming would be a SteamBox type HTPC. If it's an actual SteamBox, then good luck getting it to work. I highly doubt Microsoft will make Linux drivers for it. Very annoying that the price tag is so high, though. It just seems to be far too much compared to the old one.
Um that's a fair price. The kintect is a powerful piece of hardware
Um that's a fair price. The kintect is a powerful piece of hardware
Last time the 360 Kinect was 100 and the PC Kinect was 200. I think its the same story with this.
Last time the 360 Kinect was 100 and the PC Kinect was 200. I think its the same story with this.
The PC version of the kinect 1 was more expensive because it was more advanced, shouldn't have been 100 bucs more though.
this is a civil discussion about dollars and the kinect and I'm really confused
The whole idea of selling the kinect to developers, mocap artists, companies etc makes a ton of sense. I think that a large part of the pricetag comes from the fact that an SDK is bundled, drivers, higher quallity and support from microsoft. Using the kinect for gaming is silly especially on a pc.
The SDK isn't included; it has to be license separately. You're paying $200 for just the hardware.
Well how much is the SDK license? And will there be unofficial SDKs like with the old kinect?
Well how much is the SDK license? And will there be unofficial SDKs like with the old kinect?
free
free
So you could technically say it's bundled with the kinect because the SDK is of no use unless you own one :v:
Eh, I think it's a fair price given how advanced it is. Honestly it's pretty cheap considering what you get. It's a pretty cool device.
This is the time-of-flight Kinect, correct?
This is ridiculously expensive and the hardware shouldn't cost this much.
Best buy sells first gen kinects for $90
Best buy sells first gen kinects for $90
they also sell ps3's for $211
they also sell ps3's for $211
That's from a third party seller.
they also sell ps3's for $211
what exactly does that have to do with anything
It could be good for VR. $200 for full body realtime markerless mocap is pretty awesome, although we've still yet to see just how much latency has improved.
Eh, I think it's a fair price given how advanced it is. Honestly it's pretty cheap considering what you get. The problem is the potential for games isn't really being used so for most people it just ends up being used to navigate menus like the minority report... which is neat but not really worth $200
Understandable. They have to sell the hardware for it's full price because we don't pay the hardware off in game purchases unlike the 100$ version that's integrated into the xbone.
It could be good for VR. $200 for full body realtime markerless mocap is pretty awesome, although we've still yet to see just how much latency has improved.
how is the latency on the pc kinect 2? I doubt it could be used for VR because if its the same as xbox one kinect there is still quite a noticable latency.
what exactly does that have to do with anything
the point is that meppers telling us what old hardware costs right now is irrelevant to the new hardware it's a new upgraded model, and as was pointed out earlier it costs exactly the same as the first generation model did when they released a PC version
the point is that meppers telling us what old hardware costs right now is irrelevant to the new hardware it's a new upgraded model, and as was pointed out earlier it costs exactly the same as the first generation model did when they released a PC version
I mean obviously it's price to manufacture is more expensive because there is more hardware. but it's not $200 expensive. the first kinect cost $27 to manufacture and it's PC price point was $200. that's still a terrible deal and just because they did it last time doesnt make this time more acceptable. I doubt their price is ever going to drop as well, because it's focused at "developers" and whatevs.
im pretty sure the only people who actually would use the kinect pc are running on grant money anyways, i've seen like 5 robots with kinects plopped ontop of them at my university
